Does anyone know what the snake-like sound that you hear whenever Pumpkinhead is near is called? I saw The Maze Runner tonight and the same sound can be heard inside the maze and I've always wondered if it's an actual sound heard in nature or if it was just made for movies.

That does sound right. All cicadas I've ever heard in real life didn't sound quite like that (more like a constant hum than a helicopter noise) so that's why I could never figure it out, but then again maybe it wasn't actually cicadas I was hearing. Thanks.
shareThe chittering sounds you hear are indeed cicadas, though the may be pitched or slowed down a bit to make them sound more menacing. Similar sounds were also used in John Carpenter's "The Thing", and I can only imagine they've been used in any number of other films and TV shows.
Just watched Pumpkinhead tonight for Halloween. Still holds up, and the Scream Factory Blu-Ray is well worth the purchase.

I grew up in a part of Texas where the cicadas sound exactly like that (we call em locusts here though). I see a horror film and hear and noise and think "oh cool, there is a locust nearby".
