Is Caldwell born and raised American?

for him to have the accent he has, I can only presume that Caldwell's character emigrated when he was a teenager. Just saying. Connery doesn't even try to affect an American dialect.

No he says during the scene at the museum that he was born in Scotland, and in the scene where he is drunk on the roof he talks about moving to the USA when he was a kid.

Yes, true but also said something to the effect he could barely see over the ship's handrail on arrival to the U.S. I would think a child say 4-6 years old would lose their Scottish accent after 30 years or so in the States. I remember my younger siblings moving (I stayed) from Arkansas to upper Michigan and within a year they all had strange accents almost like the characters in Fargo. A few years later they relocated to Louisiana and soon again had a seemingly natural thick southern drawl.

You're right; in real life, his accent would have softened considerably, if not completely. And his daughter would have had at least some Scottish accent, if the man who raised her had done so with such a heavy accent.

reply

It all depends on the individual and their circumstances. It is entirely possible for the daughter born and raised in the USA to have no accent. Similarly the father may retain his accent given the family situation in which he may have been raised.🐭

I've known several people who were born elsewhere (Germany, Austria, Wales, Australia) but emigrated to the U.S., became citizens, and lived here for forty or fifty years, but never lost their accents. I'd say it's very common for foreign-born people to speak their adopted language with an accent, no matter how long they live in their new country.
