if someone could, please explain the shot of the airplane (after the landscape of hung linens) coming straight downwards toward the horizon and then disappearing behind it. We couldn't figure out what we were looking at there, or how it was done.

The camera was on its side.

The camera is tilted and the background you are seeing is a building with things hanging from the balconies. The side of the building effectively becomes the floor and that's why the airplane appears to look so odd.
