Why'd they stop making these?!

Why isn't there like 10 of these movies by now like with Hellraiser and Halloween and most other horror movies from the time? I liked how cheesy the third one was and would've liked a few more cheesy direct to video sequels.

Why didn't they get greedy with this franchise? The cast and effects were cheap and they made money, why stop?

I think there were a few different attempts at getting a 4th sequel off the ground, I read that they were planning to do a 4th with Carol Anne (recast) as a teenager back in the early 90s, it obviously never happened but I'd like to read the script

reply

Maybe because Heather passed on and they opted to not release this film until eventually it was released with a reshot ending. Recasting would have been terrible, it was Heather's role and it would have been an insult.

reply

Well, there's a new one in theaters now. It's a remake but it's still new Poltergeist so it counts.

reply

Yeah the new one explains why there were no more. Without Carol Anne and Tangina it was meh. Even the loss of original Kane made the 3rd one crapper.

reply

Because every time they made one, someone died. On average, anyway (two murders from the first film, plus Heather O'Rourke on the last one).

Lou Perryman (one of the construction workers). I remember reading the news about it at the time, because the sensationalist headline was "Poltergeist actor murdered," despite his really minor role.

From the bio: "After beating his mother's roommate with a garden tool at their Austin home, Seth Tatum walked about three miles to the home of 67-year-old Lou Perryman, an Austin actor he had never met, and killed him, according to an arrest affidavit."

True, I was actually being a bit facetious... but still, how many people get murdered?

There was a Poltergeist 4. They called it Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

The actress who played the main character died.

"The end of the shoelace is called the...IT DOESN'T MATTER!"

reply

Only the first one was great.

The star of the franchise (Heather) died before the end of Poltergeist III. I think it's a good thing that they stopped. Poor kid. She looked really sick in this movie and you could tell. It's sad that a simple surgery could have saved her. She supported her entire family and they were living in a small apartment at the time of her death. Another set of parents who lived off of their child star.
