Maybe...
I saw this movie once again. It is one of my favorite films. Everytime I watch it I pick up something else. Now it seems to me that he starts to tell the story to the actors at the Shakespeare audition. What if Jack Noah was really and unreliable narrator and everything in the movie was just a figment of his imagination? It may be a stretch, but it could be possible.
