Trouble

Jack was supposed to take Jon to jail. It was part of his deal with the feds. He also had stolen cash.

reply

So i guess he is a fugitive now?

reply

No responses despite other activity on the board.

I consider this a massive plot hole really. He let a federal prisoner go and took stolen cash. Thats prison time.

reply

You're definitely not wrong. However, I don't see this as a hole in the plot. I think Jack made an on-the-spot judgment call to releasethe Duke. Most likely some time on the flight back to Los Angeles and upon arrival at the airport.

reply

That means he is now a wanted man. He aided and abetted an known fugitive. That cash would(no matter the reality) be considered a bribe.
Jack is either on the run for life, or going to prison.

No ifs, ands, or buts.

reply

He could hide the money and say he escaped.

------

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

He could hide the money

Which would make him on the run from the IRS, and the law. Still a fugitive.

[He could] say he escaped.

Which would negate the deal with the FBI and he would be charged instead of granted immunity.

reply

i dont think jack is in any trouble

1 only jack and the duke knew about the money and niether of them is going to tell

2 jack is a independent bounty hunter and was under no compuntion to deliver the duke into police custody

3 mosley only realy wanted the duke so he could testify against serrano and as jack pointed out sorrano was prosicutable as soon as he entered the airport and was is serous trouble as soon as he took the disks all of witch was recorded by servalence so the dukes importance in prosicuting serrano was now negligable.

jack knew that if he delivered the duke into police custady that sorrano would still probably have the connections to have him killed before he became a fbi protected witness, and what a poor ending to the film that whould have been instead of the gold we got (one of my favorite endings to a movie)

and maybe the duke handd himself in to the fbi directly instead of going through the possibly corrupt police system.

these are just my musings of the end of one of my favorite films

The IRS will ask where you got the money. You cannot live above your means. If he buy that restaurant he has to prove that money came from legitimate means to the IRS. He either has to leave the country, or hide the money and spend it really slowly as to avoid attracting the attention of IRS auditors.

A specific part of the deal to let him off for impersonating an FBI agent among countless other serious charges was to deliver the duke to custody. He voided his contract with the FBI and it would not be taken lightly, especially by Mosley, who hated Jack. He wouldn't let him off the hook. Mosley still has to explain to his superiors why a federal prisoner escaped after he had him in custody. The FBI wouldn't just say, "Oh well, we got the mafia boss we were after, never mind all the felony charges against the Duke, he can go now".
The hammer would fall on Jack real quick, irl.

I understand it would make for a less interesting ending, but that does not negate my point.

reply

mosley clearly liked and respected jack in the end, you only have to see the scene where jack and serrano were talking at the airport the "another copper is *beep* your wife" bit you see mosleys face and the realisation of the history between walsh and serrono

and i'm not tyring to negate your point we both clearly like/love the film i'm just giving my opinion/take on the ending.

and as i said in my previous post i wouldnt be suprised in the duke did give himself up to mosley/FBI he didnt seem like the type to drag his wife around on the run forever esp as the main reason for being in hiding in the fist place (serrano) was in custedy and the only way for jack to get a happy endind (out of this misrable buissnes forever)and the duke to get safly into wittnes protection was how the ending panned out imho.

other opinions are valid and available

Well the_la_baker, Jack proposes the following to Mosely:

Would you let me take the Duke in
myself and collect my money?

English is not my mother tongue, but I argue that that does not constitute a promise/contract to get him into custody. He just wants to have control over the Duke again.

And Mosely agrees, since in the end, as others have stated, he is not interested in The Duke per se, but in Serrano.

So yes, I think I have negated your point. :-)

Its a verbal contract saying he will deliver the duke to custody. You cannot help a federal prisoner escape, accept stolen money, renege on a deal with the FBI, and expect to get away with it.

Maybe in your own country, or imaginary land, but not in the US of A.

Not negated.

reply

He wasn't delivering The Duke to the Feds; he was giving him to Moscone so he could collect the bounty for him. The deal Jack cut with Alonso was to get Serrano arrested. The Duke was Alonso's original way to do it, but Jack set it up so that Serrano could take fake discs and get arrested on a slew of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and several RICO Act statutes. Alonso didn't want The Duke brought to L.A. for some idiotic charge...which I admit they didn't really explain clearly in the movie (how The Duke got himself arrested and was set with that bail).

But now that Alonso got Serrano, The Duke was no longer needed.

He was delivering The Duke to custody. You need to watch the film again. The deal was if he gives the feds Serrano they will drop the charges against him and allow him to deliver the duke to custody in LA. The bail bonds man has nothing to do with it anymore. He doesn't take him to the bail bondsman... he takes him to LA county lockup. Once he is in custody Eddie will get the $500,000 he put up for his bail back from the courts and won't go belly up.

By releasing a federal prisoner and accepting stolen money he is now in deeeep trouble. Even if Alonzo doesn't care, other cops and feds and DAs will.

reply

Nobody knows about the money, so that's not a problem provided Jack was smart about it. And he could claim the Duke escaped from him...nobody could prove otherwise

He is still a fugitive and he is still hiding the money from the IRS...

Moot point is still moot.

reply

Maybe they'll make a sequel where Jack gets busted by the IRS.

My vote as well. He won't be in any trouble, no plot hole.

He is still hiding the money from the IRS, and the FBI would lock him up for not upholding their legal contract to turn the duke in. He is not a cop. He got a deal and that deal required him to turn the duke in to custody in LA. If he just says "he got away" with no injuries or verifiable story(and probably even if he had them) he would most certainly be held responsible and prosecuted for the laundry list of offenses he was obviously guilty of, including impersonating a federal agent.

I get the feeling you people are terrible at chess.

I would reply but my brain is still not functioning properly.

Oh shít wait... I did just reply.
