Did he take the $180 from his daughter?

I always thought that Walsh declined the money his daughter offered and drove off, but watching it again I thought I saw the cash in his hand as he's holding the steering wheel. Not a big deal, but it's bugging me.

reply

I'd like to say no, but... I feel that he either did or didn't.

If you look closely, the daughter doesn't have the money when Jack gets into the car, and most importantly - the dough in Jack's hand DID look like it was the same one his daughter wanted to give him.

But, in the end, I'll just assume the money Jack was holding was really the one lent to him by his ex-wife...

Jack just wasn't the type of person who would take money from the daughter he hadn't seen in many years.

I once read a book about movies that stated that the makers never showyou anything for no reason - certainly if your attention is drawn to anything, no matter how seemingly trivial, it will be used in the story later on.

So I was fully expecting that sometime later, Walsh would be really desperate for cash, and would find that his daughter had slipped it in his pocket when they were having their last hug.

It didn't happen but I like to think that it was the beginning of a plot development that they later decided to leave out.

Having seen the original script, online, the money in his hand was from his ex. He did not take his daughters. Him not taking the money was to represent that though Jack is having a tough go of it, and he hasn't seen his daughter in a long time, and probably a long time before he sees her again, she is still his daughter, and a dad wouldn't do that.

reply

No, he didn't.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

No way would Jack take that money from his daughter!

1. He already is full of guilt for not seeing his daughter all these years

2. Like Serrano said in the movie " he's (jack) a very self righteous guy, it annoys me!"

reply

Why not? It's not like he couldn't pay her back when he got home, and it was an emergency.

Death to shakeycam directors!

reply

The point of the scene was that Jack knew he was never going to see his daughter ever again. He realized during the visit that not only did he not have a relationship with his daughter, he never had one, and was never going to have one, because she now had a different father.

I concur with EX250's post.
Jack was probably never going to see his daughter again. He hadn't seen her in years (crucial developing years) and the guilt on his face shows in that awkward moment of silence scene when Gale is getting the car keys for him. He neglected her all these years for his self righteous pride, or whatever it may be. De Niro plays this emotional moment, perfectly.

Jack Walsh was on the other side of the law as far as Gail's household, along with her corrupt cop husband, was concerned.

It doesn't matter how his character was written or how the audience feels. He took the money.

Spongyone, I wholeheartedly agree with your sign off line. And the sooner the better.

reply

The cash in his hand is the money that his ex-wife had just given him.

reply

The wife only gave him $40. The cash you see against the steering wheel is a much bigger wad of bills. Jack took the money. I'm sure he paid her back tenfold after he let the Duke go.

Continuity issue with the editing, man.

Deniro is saying 'I can't honey, I can't. I'm sorry" as he's hugging his daughter. Why would he just suddenly usurp the money out of her hand? Why would the director of the movie not fill the audience in on this part? It's not like its some kind of secret or anything. We are privy to pretty much every thing with what is going on behind the scenes in the movie. Every thing is above boards and the director does not try to trick or deceive the audience at any point in the movie so why would he start at that point? It doesn't make any sense. Continuity issue is the only explanation.

My best guess is yes. The money the daughter had was a 'wad' of notes. The same wad is in Jacks left hand on the the steering wheel.
The scene leading up to that us jack and the duke leaving the house, walking down the drive and Jack putting the duke in the car. At no point in that scene does Jack have any money in his hands.
So if its not his daughters money in his hand when he's driving away it would mean he took the money that his ex wife gave him back out of a pocket and into his hand, unlikely.
I'd say the money is the daughters and its lost in the edit.
I reckon the original shoot had jack originally refusing the money and then reluctantly accepting the money. But in the edit they decided it went against Jacks character to accept the money so edited it to make it look like he hadn't.

reply

With bigger TVs now we, the audience, can definitively see the huge wad of bills. And DVDs allow us to rewind and zoom as much as we want to review scenes. He definitely had more than 40 dollars against the steering wheel.

I thought that Walsh didn't take the money from his daughter but my gosh, HE DID!!! Just rewatched the scene.

He leaves the house with just the car keys in his hand and Jonathan in his other hand. He puts Jonathan in the car then goes around to the other side of the car with NOTHING in his hands except the car keys. Then when Denise runs out, he tells her NO, but then when he gets in the car, he has a wad of money in his left hand and then Denise stands in the driveway as he drives away with NOTHING in her hands. He said no but took the money anyway.

Wow.
