Who exactly was Sidney (Philip Baker Hall). I was one of Serrano's men, but he seemed more like an attorney than a gangster. Who the heck was he supposed to be? It was never very clear.

I always thought of him as the equivalent of a consigliere for Serrano. Granted, he's no Tom Hagen.

Philip Baker Hall also played a Las Vegas guy called Sydney in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Hard Eight". I've always wondered if this was inspired by "Midnight Run".
