If this movie was made today....

If this movie was set in 2013 there are some things that would probably not be in the movie because they wouldn't apply properly. Most of these are silly minor things :

These aren't 100% sealed deal true, just some observations :

- After speaking with Jack, Helen Nelson calls the Duke's home phone number. This gives Jack the Duke's address. In the age of cell phones she more than likely would have called a cell phone, which would not have allowed Jack to get the Duke's address

- Jack used scissors on the plane to cut up his picture and then attach it to Mosley's FBI ID. In a post 9-11 world Jack would not have been able to bring a pair of scissors on the plane

- When buying a plane ticket Marvin is asked if he would like to be in the smoking or non-smoking section. These days he wouldn't have the option because flights are all non-smoking.

- Computer disks are almost never used these days. If anything, it would probably be a flash drive which Jack would be using as bait for Serrano.

That's all I got off the top of my head. Anybody else notice anything that would apply.....?

I bet Marvin couldn't cancel Jack's credit card so easily.

Phone taps would be easier because of cell phones.

Marvin couldn't take a Polaroid instant shot of The Duke in the motel.

I think Marvin would probably take the pic with his phone and just show it to them.

How about the fact that Jack was seemingly in the middle of the plane next to a lone child in the window seat. I mean, in what scenario does that really exist? Certainly not typically enough for that scene not to be a little distracting from the joke (him showing the kid the pic and the kid confirming it looks good).

One of the very best movies of the 80's and one of the best movies-that-doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously of all time.

Thank you for your time.

Cel phones have ruined so many potential storylines. Any road trip movies would lose the "being out of contact" scenarios. Like in, "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" when Neil was in the hotel room and the rotary phone had a lock on it.

reply

The Duke and Walsh would NOT have been able to pull off that currency counterfeit scheme because of today's technology that safeguards against those incidents

reply

Are you kidding me ? A group of guys just got done ripping off millions by hacking into bank accounts through ATM machines a couple weeks ago. Anything is possible these days.

reply

They would have needed the machinery to do it. As for pulling off the EXACT scam they did, there is so much public information about what to look for in a counterfeit bill, Red would have taken a look at the bills and checked them himself. Or used one of those markers they have these days that can tell if the paper the bills were printed on were good.

And in the final climatic scene, crazy ass Marvin was about to board a flight back to Los Angeles packing a handgun. Yeah, very improbable in 2013.

Just adding to this discussion

The amount of smoking in public places. Nearly every scene jack (and other characters) were seen smoking in restaurants, cafes, buses, trains, planes, etc

Seems weird nowadays seeing how things were like back then

if this movie was made today...it wouldn't be as good as the 1988 version

^^ this says it all

the two mob guys wouldn't be able to fool around while talking to their boss because it would be a Skype call and he'd be able to see them

FaceTime

i re-watched Midnight Run last night

scary just good De Niro was back when he acted instead of phoning it in

reply

It would probably star Mark Wahlberg in the De Niro role and Will Ferrell in the Grodin part. 98% certain that is the casting they'd go with.
