Maybe I need to see the movie again, as I don't remember that painting.
I do remember that painting that hangs in D'Ampton Hall of an ancestor of Lord D'Ampton (Hugh Grant) cutting the white worm in half.
There is a painting of the Hindu goddess Kali hanging over the fireplace at Temple House. Which would make sense, as it is said that Kali is often accompanied by serpents.
Then there is the painting behind Kevin (Chris Pitt), just before the scene changes from him in the parlor to him in the bath. That painting has some significance, because the camera focuses on it for several seconds, but I've never been able to find out what is significant about it, because I've never been able to identify it.
I can't say whether any of these paintings were commissioned for the film. What was commissioned for the film was the mosaic of the whie snake draped around the cross, which is found by Angus (Peter Capaldi) at Temple House. It is a big mosaic, as it is as tall as the average man.
