I grew up in the 1980's and I swear that every mom-and-pop VHS rental store had a massive, I mean MASSIVE cardboard cutout of this movie. What the hell?! Did people really go that ape-$h1t over this movie back then?

I don’t remember a cutout but I vividly remember staring at the VHS cover whenever I went to the store, the title combined with the imagery were transfixing.

It was huge in the country of Europe. The picture also shot overseas. It was never a big hit in the US.

I thought it was just alright but no one can deny it's an interesting movie.
Also from what I gather it was never a huge hit, it's always been a slightly obscure flick. So no, I don't think people went 'ape shit' over it in the late 80s.

It was seen, quite rightly, as sub par Ken Russell. Which it clearly was...a director in the twilight of his career, and on his last legs.
In a 1999 interview with The AV Club, Hugh Grant recalled that Ken Russell would, following a rather liquid lunch, direct him using language like "Do it how I showed you, you fuckin' cunt!"

shareI don't remember it getting much promotion. It was jus one of the movies on the shelves. It was a good one, though. A little weird and kinky, and of course there was Amanda Donahue. Great casting, there.
