Original aspect ratio?

Anyone know if this was filmed in full frame or widescreen?

Well the fullscreen can be cropped to fit theatrical screenings. Look at many of the DVDs with fullframe and widescreen options; most give you an example of a scene in the movie pictured twice. One is widescreen and the other full. Now with most 1.85:1 the wide one shows more- when it comes to the examples, not the film, but if you actually check the actual movie while it's running in widescreen then go back to the fullscreen view, you'll notice that the top and bottoms just chopped off to make it wide, making the majority of these DVD companies total liars! Check it yourself...I have many times. I'd say that, if you own or can rent 'em, that Spider-man is a good example of the widescreen version really being the best way to go. But if you look at Creepshow you'll see that it's cropped, taking away the top and bottom of the movie. It happens in every aspect ratio, I think. You just have to be cautious.

That's called "matted" widescreen. The film is shot with the widescreen framing intended usually, but since it's master copy has the information from the "bottom" of the matted image then they just shift it upwards for the full screen version, essentially just removing the bottom bar. That's why you see more picture -- but it's not necessarily the way it's intended to be seen. That's why a matted movie that includes graphics (ie. a headline news channel) the images will often appear a little too close to the middle of the screen in the full screen versoin.
