Um...??

Ok, does anyone know about the NEW Hairspray movie? The one from 2007? Because you all seem to think I am talking about the really old ones, and I'm not.

I know this is the old movie's board, but when I was talking about comparing the two, you all thought I was talking about the REALLY old ones.

You make no sense? This is the original. Therefore there wasn't an older Hairspray movie.

Young Hillary: Be sure to keep in touch C.C. ok?
Young C.C.: Well sure we're friends aren't we?

First came "Hairspray (1988)" the John Waters film which this board is all about. This was the genesis of the "Hairspray" phenomenon, particularly because of Ricki Lake's awesome take on Tracy. Also, they used music from the early 1960's, which was great! The movie became such cult classic that a great idea was hatched...

The movie was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2001 (or was it 2002?). This was based on the 1988 movie. The storyline and characters were consolidated to bring the story to the stage (a common practice when turning movies into plays). A new musical score was written, which is why the song "Hairspray," (from the 1988 movie) is not in the stage version. They did, however, use "The Madison Time" in the stage version, and you can bet they paid a pretty penny for rights to use it.

The stage musical proved to be a success, so it was adapted into a new movie, "Hairspray (2007)." Again the story was messed around with, songs from the stage show were cut, and new songs were put into the film (a song that was used in the stage version cannot be considered for an Oscar, which is why new songs are added for a movie).

OK! I hope this clears things up!

hairspray 1988 is the original movie

the broadway musical was made in 2002, and is based on this movie

the hairspray 2007 is based on the 2002 musical, but it also honors the old material, which is the 1988.

2007 IS NOT A REMAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol sorry that just pisses me off.
