Former member Steve Taylor is my sister's father. He was married to my mom in the 70's and devorced after 7 years(he has been married numorous times since than). He told me the other day that his band was in the movie hairspray. But I do not see him anywhere in it. He swears he was but his mind os rather shot because of dementia and altztimers. He told me he was kicked out of the band because of his drinking problem but I think it was before Hairspray.

For any lafayette fans interested

He is now living in Queen Anns county Md with my sister who is his caretaker as I said before he has altimers and dementia and cant take care of himself like he should. I was over there this week caring for him while visiting my sis. He is a great guy and I believe we have grown kinda close and told me all kinds of things including about the Lafayettes and Hairspray. After he left the lafayettes he played in a band called the Fugitives for a while.

He no longer plays the guitar because of his muscles in his fingers keep him from doing so. I keep telling him that he needs to play again it will give him something to do and strengthan his finger muscles

was he indeed apart of the Lafayettes at the time of this movie and was he in the movie in person. I cant tell because his appearence has changed drematically over the years. He has stopped drinking and has been sober for 30 years but the damage has been done. Any help will be appriciated.

If you Listen to the John Waters commentary on the DVD for this movie he explains everything.
He says they were a band in Baltimore, and He had people play them in the movie.

I think your sister's father means the band's song is IN the movie, and not the actual band members. The original recording of "Life's Too Short," by The Lafayettes was used in "Hairspray." They assembled several younger actors to portray the group. The song reached #87 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962.
