I've seen this movie many times but I still don't know why the first scenes were located in Greece? Why were Jacques's and Enzo's parents there? Jacques's father was shown in the movie but what was he really doing? He was a fisherman. Why couldn't he do his work in France? And why was Enzo's traditional Italian family there in Greece?

It was never explained as far as I remember. I think the relevance is more that this is where Enzo and Jacques first developed their rivalry, or at least Enzo did.
