Short or Long Version?

What do you prefer the short version which was showing in the theatres in europe, or the long director's cut version on DVD? I've watched the short version on free-TV and I was so impressed that I bought today the Director's Cut on DVD. I will watch the film these days ...

I've not seen it, but the general complaint about Big Blue is that it's overly long, so I'm thinking the long version might be... even longer

Either way I love the film, so for me the more the better!

If you really liked the short version, I'm sure you'll love the Director's Cut. It gives you different perspectives on characters, some nice and funny scenes, goes deeper in the relationship between Jacques and Johanna, etc. To me, now, the short version is not really worth watching, since changes so much important stuff that you get to see plenty on the Director's Cut.
Hope you enjoy it.

Well, I watched the long version and enjoyed it, so I'd have to say that...

I saw the U.S. theatrical version (short version) when it first came out probably 10 times. I loved it! I bought the DVD a while back, couldn't wait to show it to friends who had never seen it, and we all agreed.... it was too long. The shorter version seemed magical (at the time anyway), and this longer version just seemed to drag... needlessly repeating the same thoughts and ideas that had already been introduced earlier. I still loved it, but I think maybe the shorter version is the one I might prefer.... more to the point.

By any chance was the difference in music really noticable?

YES! It's a completely different SCORE! Bill Conti did it for the "shorter" version and.... sorry, I forget who did the other. Back when I had seen it at the theatres I LOVED the score and bought the soundtrack. It was not the same score at ALL. After having seen the longer version I realize now that the score I had heard all those years ago was from THIS version. Too weird! It's rare for a shorter version of a film to have a COMPLETELY different score!

I've seen both versions, but I actually prefer the original American release. Part of it has to do with the fact that the original release was what I fell in love with. The music and the uplifting ending played a big part in that. The longer version (Director's Cut) has a different sound track (Eric Serra's score is less ethereal, more jazzy) and a less optimistic ending (at least from the perspective of Johana). The extra scenes are nice and add a little depth to the world of the film, but don't overcome the two big problems I have with the Directors Cut (score and ending). I have actually been looking for the original on video for a while, but it is extremely difficult to find in mint condition. I thought that there was a DVD version of the original release (put out prior to the Directors Cut), but have found no evidence of it.

I just saw the long version. What is the ending in the short version? Does it cut out the final diving competitions?

Wow, this is the first time I've heard there's any other version than the two European ones I've seen. Yes, two - both with Eric Serra's music, both with the "sad" ending, but with slight changes in minor scenes (one version had some scenes with Jacques' uncle, with Enzo's girlfriend, etc.) Frankly speaking, I cannot imagine watching this with any other music than Eric Serra's (the opening track eg. makes me immediately think of water, diving and the Med - regardless of where I am) and DEFINITELY no other, "positive" ending!
