The Musical!

I just thought I would come comment - I just saw the musical version of this movie in previews on Broadway. It captured the spirit of the movie with just a few alterations, and was one of the funniest musicals I've ever seen. The songs are catchy and upbeat, and there are plenty of witty remarks. The cast currently includes John Lithgow as Lawrence - he was wonderful; I didn't even know he could sing. The rest of the cast was just as funny, with a great sense of comic timing. If you get a chance, go see this! (It's in previews until the beginning of March, when it officially "opens".)

reply

Yes! Lithgow is a very talented singer.
Would you recommend this to someone who's just a really big fan of the movie. I'm not too into musicals (obviously I don't hate them either) but this is the first one I've been interested in a musical since the Black Rider. What sets this apart from most other musicals?

This show is so worth it! And it is as funny as the movie, nothing compares to the original. check out the website and read the articles and critics on www.dirtyrottenscoundrelsthemusical.com

That is outrageous. Jack Black doesn't belong on Broadway, he belongs in unfunny "comedies" where his inability to act is obvious.

I agree!!! besides, Norbert Leo Butz does a fine job! (He rules!!!)

I loved Butz's performence at the Tony's as well! I was however, upset that they bleeped out so many words- such as "Hummers in my hummer", and "..pouring out my ass." That was the whole joke! I t made me mad.

Norbert Leo Butz performing "Great Big Stuff" at the Tony's was the highlight of the ceremony, in my opinion. I was so glad he won Best Actor!
And if you guys haven't heard him as Fiyero in Wicked, go buy the cast recording. It is WORTH IT.

reply

Oh yes, but just for The Butz? Dirty Rotten Scoundrels recording shows off his voice a lot more. Mind you, Wicked's my favorite musical so I'm not downplaying it by any means.

I was so ecstatic when he won the Tony. I started jumping up and down and cheering and getting very odd stares from my brother. I didn't care, Norbert definitely deserved that Tony (which is saying something on my part, as Hank Azaria is one of my favorite actors)! I wish I could see the musical for myself though. Damn midwest...

I was really mad about them beeping him out, too. SERIOUSLY, most of those words can hardly be counted as cuss words at all!

Oh! It seems the artichoke is steamed.

I LOVE THE MUSICAL.

First off, I'm a musical junkie, so I've been exposed to MANY shows.

And let me say, this musical is one of the best I've ever seen. Firstly, the cast is AMAZING, so I suggest you all go see it before cast members start to leave! (Note: John Lithgow is supposedly taking a vacation sometime in August, so watch out for that) When I saw it, the only reason why I was compelled to buy a ticket, NORBERT LEO BUTZ (!!!!)...was not there. I was so upset. But, once his understudy came on, I totally forgot his absense! (which says something!)

Secondly, this show just makes ya LAUGH! and no, i'm not talking about the laugh that you make just to show that you're awake; i'm talking about real, whole-hearted laughs. And, to praise the cast again, it's all because of the actors, their energy, and their comedic timing. Plus, considering that they perform the same jokes and songs 8 days a week, it's pretty impressive, I think!

Thirdly, the music is just superb. It has that hollywood kind of style to it (I really don't know how to describe it!) and the lyrics are impressively smart! This show comes from the same guy who put out "the Full Monty," also based on a movie, so if you liked that show, you will like this one too.

And, I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm almost positive that if you're a fan of the movie that you'll also be a fan of the musical. I personally don't think that it's by any means a waste of money, and it entertains the audience during every second.

I bought the CD the other day and am obsessed. I do, however, think the musical is funnier if you've already seen the movie, because you can appreciate the musical treatment of certain scenes (I personally think "All About Ruprecht" and "Ruffausin' mit Shauffausin" are even funnier knowing the scenes first).

What gets me, though, is that there is some geniunely awesome music, highly remniscent of '20's/'30's era musicals. "Nothing is Too Wonderful to be True" and "Like Zis/Like Zat" are very Cole Porter-esque (even the jokes in the latter are very Porter).

I can't wait to see the show.

reply

I can't wait for you to see it either, because the CD is *nothing* compared to what you actually see on stage! tehe. Have fun!

reply

While I like Jack Black, I think Norbert Leo Butz was perfect. I met him through a friend, he's so like his character in the show, it's hilarious. What a cool guy.

reply

I've only heard the CD, (LOVE IT) so here is the review I posted iny my LJ...

Well, as a fan of the 1988 film, I expected for the musical to suck compared. I was pleasantly surprised. The music fit the premise and the setting very well. I was very pleased with Norbert Leo Butz's performance (not as much how the character was writtne though. But he performed it very well). Even though Freddy was written as a greedy sex fiend (which I didn't like, since i focused more on the sex fiend part in the musical, where it focused more on the greediness in the film, which I found much funnier than all the sex jokes in the musical) yet Butz made the character a lot more likeable than he sounded. John Lithgow did a great job, but the character (again) was written differently than in the movie. In the movie, you could believe that women might find Lawrence (played by Michael Caine in the movie) suave and charming, but the way David Yazbeck wrote Lawrence in the musical, he seemed much too exaggerated to be believed. Same with Christine (known as Janet in the film, which I think was much more clever. Why the hell did they change her name to Christine?? I thougth that was a stupid decision). She just seemed much much too gullible. But I thoguth for the most part, the songs were funny and clever, and the plot (mostly) stuck to the same plat as the movie. All in all, I thought the musical was very good, but it could have been closer to the movie (it still confuses me as to why they changed Janet's name to Christine. It wasn't even in any songs, so they didn't have to rhyme it with anything). If you don't compare it to the movie, it was a very good musical. Even though I prefer the movie (I love Steve Martin & Michael Caine!!). I DID like that Andre had a larger part. Not so much Muriel (known as Fanny in the movie. Another useless name change), but since they ended up together, I guess Muriel's part was necessary for Andre's part. I really really really liked Norbert Leo Butz in this (I love his voice!). I have a quote from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the movie in my user profile that I'm very curious to know if it was in the musical (it's my absolute favorite part in the movie. It's not even the funniest part, but I just love it for some reason).

But I'm very critical, so that's just me. I LOVE THE MUSICAL.

Here's the quote I mentioned being in my user profile...

"Freddy, as a younger man, I was a sculptor, a painter, and a musician. There was just one problem: I wasn't very good. As a matter of fact, I was dreadful. I finally came to the frustrating conclusion that I had taste and style, but not talent. I knew my limitations. We all have our limitations, Freddy. Fortunately, I discovered that taste and style were commodities that people desired. Freddy, what I am saying is: know your limitations. You are a moron."

reply

when they make a musical out of a movie, I will ALWAYS prefer the musical. I'm a full fledged theater nerd. I have the cast recording and I listen to it all the time. I have this friend to which whom I told about the song Great Big Stuff he's like: what's that??? so i told him. and then he heard the soundtrack with a friend and now he's all mr. dirty rotten scoundrels!!!!! and now he's going to see it in nov., and he rubs it in all the time. Which makes me mad b/c this is his first time to NY, too. hehehe... anyway...
I LOVE DRS!!!

valjeanlover, that quote, WORD FOR WORD was in the musical!

i was surprised to see that the musical used a LOT of quotes directly from the movie!

reply

i heard a recording of the entire show but its really sucks that i dont have the picture to go with it (its still hilarious!!) can someone explain to me what happened at the end between christina/freddie/lawrence? please!!! i really need to know, its driving me nuts!!!

reply

Basically the same thing that happened in the movie. Honestly, the plot itself wasn't really that different from the movie. Which is AWESOME.

reply

SWEET!!! I love that quote. Now I HAVE to see that freaking musical!! =D

I saw this musical this summer, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it's not one of my favorites. (That honor goes to The Light in the Piazza.) Norbert Leo Butz was fabulous, as always. (I've loved him since his days in The Last Five Years.) While not the greatest singer in the world, you have to give John Lithgow props for how far he's come vocally since Sweet Smell of Success, for which he won the Tony without being able to sing. The rest of the cast was brilliant and wonderfully energetic, especially the fabulous Sherie Rene Scott, and David Yazbek's lyrics were delightful. I can't listen to "Love Is My Legs" without cracking a smile and singing along.

I bought the cast recording after seeing the show, and I think I actually enjoy listening to it more than seeing it, partially because so many of the lyrics were lost within the audience laughter, and I found some of Butz's onstage antics as Ruprecht rather distasteful. I know, the character is supposed to be like that, and they worked well. I just, personally, did not wish to view them. Call me old-fashioned.

~This is almost touching what the beauty is.~

I'm so mad! I went to see the musical version, and Norbert Leo Butz(Freddy) had an UNDERSTUDY! Oh, how I loathe that word with a passion. I'm sure if Norbert was there, I would have enjoyed it a lot better because just him on the soundtrack made me pee my pants.

The broadway musical was FANTASTIC! PRYCE played an amazing role as Caine! and the understudy was amazing as well. it was hilarious and the best broadway musical ive seen in my life! These 2 (especially Pryce who i love) reminded me of Caine and Martin. This movie/musical is one of my favorites ever....sadly they dont make movies like that anymore, nor with actors of the same calibur as Caine and Martin, Pryce is one amazing actor as well. I saw this last wednsday..a hell of a good time! soe of my favorite lines, bc i had so many and was cracking up the whole time..... Freddy- Where London? LAwrence - Detroit!!!!! luv that and how he spoke spanish at the end!!! HAHAHA these actors are amazing as well as this show. Pryce has a really good voice! cant wait to see him in Pirates of the carribean

I saw the musical with the original cast in 2005. It was increadible. I would probably agree with the funniest broadway musical that I have yet seen. I would definately go if they made a movie out of it. My favorite line would probably have to be... Lawrence (as shuffhausen): As we say in Vienna... OLE!!! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed good music and a good laugh.

reply

I saw the original cast as well, in June 2005. It is definitely the funniest musical I have ever seen, topping Avenue Q, simply because the humor was more of the sharp-witted comedy that I prefer to the various dirty jokes played up in Avenue Q. What I loved most about the show, though, is that it tries very hard to break the barriers of conventional musical theater, those being between the audience, the cast, the lighting crew, and the orchestra. At various points in the show, cast members seek to cue the orchestra and the lights to create romantic atmosphere, an usher rises out of the audience to sing a solo, and Freddie takes a seat in the balcony.

Things like that make this show thoroughly enjoyable, even from the very center of the back row in the balcony (where I was seated). Also, the fact that every member of the cast puts everything they have into making the show great... Especially Norbert Leo Butz. The group I was with stayed after to meet the cast, and he came onto the stage, but was completely hoarse and couldn't answer our questions himself, he had to tell them to other cast members who responded for him. They said he comes off stage after every show in that condition. Absolutely incredible.

While I haven't seen the movie (I'm hoping to do so very soon), I'd definitely recommend the show.

Oh, and I'd have to say my favorite line is... well, actually it's all of Freddie's part in "Love is My Legs." Like another poster, I can't help but smile and sing along.

reply

I've seen 2 different casts(excpect Greg Jbara, he was in both times) but I haven't had a complaint about either.

My favorite Freddy is, without a doubt, Norbert, though his understudy(Jason Gillman) was still very good, and didn't dissapoint the crowd. Both Pryce and Lithgow were excellent, very different, but still excellent. Sherie and Rachel are both truly talented, I can't say who's my favorite, though I think I'm leaning towards Sherie. Joanna, who just recently left, was amazing, and hilarious. Her understudy, Rachel DeBenet, is very good, I saw her the first time and thought she was great. Both Mylinda Hull and Sara Gettlefinger have been excellent, though I like Sara better. And as for Greg, well I love Greg, very talented, and very nice!

If you've yet to see this show, GO!
