Why no sequel?

The ending of this film was such an obvious set up for a sequel. Anyone know why they never made one?

I'm not sure. Had either actor done a sequel at that point in their career? I know now they have, but maybe they didn't feel this was movie to do a sequel with. They also had sort of career revivals after this movie. Steve Martin started doing more serious and tonned down stuff. Like parenthood and father of the bride. And Michael Caine just, well, kept on doing all kinds of things. He had won an academy award a year before and maybe wasn't thinking comedy or offered comedy roles.

I hope today that they'd still consider and do a sequel.

I also feel it wasn't going to have a sequel. *** SPOILER FOLLOWS *** It was just a nice and surprising ending to see them all together again as the credits roll.

Great film!!

I would concur that the story was told here and that a sequel wasn't really necessary, but I wouldn't be averse to one if the idea was ever broached though I have to wonder if Caine and Martin might be a little too old for this kind of physical comedy now.

"....But watch Martin while the credits role. His character, Freddie Benson seems to have second thoughts and appears to make a run for it."

C'mon man.....he's not "having second thoughts and making a run for it", he's pissed that she made his character a mute and he's tired of getting treated like an amatuer by Caine's character and now The Jackal as well so he makes like he is gonna storm off in a huff while he has no real intention of leaving. I don't know...I thought that was pretty obvious...apparantly not to some....

I thought it was hilarious that she made him a mute and when Caine says "Ruprecht! We have a guest. What do we do for guests? What did we do when uncle Ted was here?"
and then Martin puts on a rubber glove and starts applying lubricant. Just loved the whole Ruprecht character.

By the way pndferpnd, where is that quote from in your signature? It sounds like something right out of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Good call xkenjisanx, that's exactly where it's from. When they go to ancient Greece and are watching Socrates do his thing.
