The movie musical of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, should it ever happen, would have a draw with famous John Lithgow. However, since Norbert Leo, though brilliant in the role, would bring no outside crowd, what do you think of comedian turned Broadway singer Stephen Lynch as Freddie? Would it work?
I expect Norbert would get the role, he's the perfect Freddy. I don't know that they'd use Sherie Rene Scott though. They should, she's amazing, and she hasn't had a big movie role, but if you've got Norbert, they don't need Sherie for the theatre crowd. I think go with OBC and they won't go wrong.
I really wish it would happen. But the whole reason why I love DRS is because of Norbert and Jonathan....they are great together..... Should they do a movie hollywood should cast them... but I doubt that that would happen..... directors would want actors with "star power"
MGM (or whichever studio has the rights to the film, I'm having a brain fart) has announced that they would like to do a movie adaptation of the recent broadway musical. I'm sure alot of it depends on how the upcoming high-profile movie-musicals turn out. (see: Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Bat Boy, and Sweeny Todd)
While I'm not sure about NLB, I think 3 time Emmy winner, Golden Globe Winner, and Academy Award nominee John Lithgow may have enough star power to get into a moive cast. But I think those two would be the best. Them recasting the female lead with someone like Uma Thurman (ala the producers) isn't that much of a stretch though.

I doubt Lynch would get more publicity than Norbert. Norbert did win the tony, was totally amazing and is breaking into the film buisness. He had a nice supporting role in Dan in Real Life. I have to say Jack Black would be a logical replacement for Norbert, but why bother Norbert and Pryce are gold. I say pryce, cause lithgow's "british" accent and singing weren't that great and Pryce is actually more popular in the film buisness.
Well, Lithgow has the star power to pull crowds but they'd need to balance it with someone like Will Ferrell as Freddy. I love Norbert and he was superb, but they just wouldn't cast him. With Rent, I think the only reason they kept the OBC members that were available (Daphne Ruben-Vega was pregnant, I don't know who played Joanne) was because it was such an ensemble. The only reason why Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick were able to stay on The Producers was because they had star power. Uma Thurman replaced the fabulous Cady Huffman (who won the Tony) because they needed another star. Gary Beach and Roger Bart were probably only kept because the film had three major stars and that's all they needed for box office draw. It's very rare that a performer leaves such an impression on a role to make it his with no chance of it ever being anyone else's like Joel Grey who won the Tony and then won the Oscar for his performances in Cabaret. I'd love to see Nornert and Sherie reprise their roles, but I just don't see it happening.
"It's not tonight? Why are you wearing a tux?" "Lemmon, it's after six. What am I, a farmer?"
I'm just discovering the musical (through youtube of course). I can't believe I didn't think I would like DRS; the Tony performance and Love is my Legs, alone, make me regret that the show closed on Broadway. Anyway, it is pretty much never that I want the OBC performer to play their same role on film. I may love them to bits in the show, but I have no problem with another talented performer, with or without star power, to take over the role. I'm excited/interested in their own interpretation.
That said, if I were a producer, I'd definitely cast Norbert in the movie. Sherie, too, if I could. If they do recast Freddy, assuming it even gets made, Jack Black and Will Ferrell, -especially Black- seem to be very fitting. People are starting to get sick of Ferrell, so I'd ask Jack first.
"She plays like a Stradivarius, man," said Mr. Dobkin of Rachel McAdams. R.I.P. Heath Ledger
But Norbert made such an impression. I've seen two other guys try to play the role (his understudy, and his replacement when he left the show) and both fell miles short, as would jack black and stephen lynch. Steve Martin falls miles short as well.
