Valmont is so evil in this!

He practically rapes Cecile! I mean in Cruel Intentions he takes advantage of her but in this film he scares her and threatens her. He doesn't even care that she has a miscarriage or even that he got her pregnant, he has no sympathy for her.

Sebastion in CI at least does feel guilty about it in the end.

"he has no sympathy for her."

Actually I think he does, but is hard to see this as he has an image to maintain. I think the characters being evil would be in keeping with the book, which I have started from time to time, but have not finished....

He and marquise de Mertuil were both really cruel people. No matter how bored you are, you shouldn't play with other people's emotions like that. How many lives did they ruin, just because they couldn't come up with something better to do?

Yes, it's true! IMDB has reached Sweden!

Agree....but he wasn't able to keep up with the game after developing a 'true' relationship, developed a conscience (perhaps) and checked out of the game on a perminent basis....

Just some thoughts....

Yeah, I think he regretted a lot, when he was dying.

He didn't rape her. She was hesitant at the first mainly because of what her mother had taught her and because of the social mores at that time. Later (when speaking to Marquise de Merteuil) she admits not only that she wasn't feeling uncomfortable but also she actually enjoyed Valmont's "presence". And ever since she was told (by the Marquise) she wasn't doing anything wrong satisfying her sexuality the young Cécile was quite happy to see Valmont. Every time, every night. So no, definitely she was not raped. That's the magnificence of Valmont's art of seduction. He always knows best where to push you to take you completely out of control. I personally admire his sensuality and charm. Though playing his game of love is a dangerous thing, I don't think I could be able to resist him if he was real.. So seductive, so strong, so powerful magnetism of his...

And as far as his "sympathy" (for Cécile) or the lack of it - that's irrelevant. The actual rape is NOT less rape because the freak feels sorry for his victim! Geez.. just the thought of this gives me the creeps.

I doubt Valmont was violent with Cécile, that would have put the blame firmly on him if she told anyone, but he definitely threatened, bullied and coerced her into submission. If that isn't rape, then I don't know what is. She only became Valmont's willing sexual partner on the "advice" of the Marquise. But whether Valmont actually feels anything at all for Cécile is not the point. The point is he only bedded her to humiliate her Mother for ruining his chances with Madame de Tourvel. Just as the Marquise uses her as an implement of revenge on Cécile's future husband, Bastide her former lover who has abandoned her. To Valmont and The Marquise, Cécile is nothing more than a weapon that can be used to attack someone they feel has slighted them. It's a "Tour de Force" performance demonstrating the power and complete lack of conscience or morality of these two when they act together.
