What is so great about Tom Cruise's character in this film?

Couldn't the guy he teamed up with find anyone better? Tom Cruise couldn't do much compared to most people in terms of his skills with bar "flairing".

There's nothing special about him at all but I think he just has some sort of charm about him and he was a decent friend to someone who was really screwed up and felt he had no one in the world except him. Just my guess.

Dick, I am VERY disappointed.

I can't watch a Tim Cruise movie without remembering what a psycho he is. Can't get past it.
