What happened? He leaves the poilce station and the next time we see him is when Candy Clark is in the phone booth. They could have at least set it up to show us he was about to be killed. Maybe it was cut?

shareIt was to give Fran a sense of false hope when she dialed the precinct. She's told he left for the diner, meaning to pick Fran up for their date. It's brutal in that she's trapped in the booth, and her date is being dissolved right in front of her.
From how it all went down, I think he saw Fran run into the phone booth, as he approached the blob snapped him up. The blob seems to have descended onto the phone booth from either the roof or a vent in the diner.
I think that's probably why they deleted the scene of the blob pursuing Fran through the diner. You can see Fran running as the blob knocks tables and chairs over in the movie's trailer. In a similiar scene later in the movie, the blob is shown pursuing Meg and the kids, through the movie theater, down the stairs, through the alley and into the sewer. So it would seem odd that it stopped pursuing Fran to give her time to smash and jump out a window.
Yeah, you're thinking that the Sheriff is going to be the hero of the film, that he is gonna save them and get them out of there. Killing him off like that was a great shock because they gave you the impression that he would be the hero. Looking back, it's kind of a waste because Jeffrey DeMunn's such a cool actor. I thought he was great in here, it was a cool shock too.
