Why kill the sheriff and not the deputy?

I'm kinda surprised at their choice to kill off the sheriff played by Jeffrey DeMunn (known for having appeared in all of Frank Darabont's directed movies and this one which Darabont co-wrote) and instead keep the deputy alive who from the beginning came of as kind of a prick. They could have easily reversed their roles in the death and kept the sheriff alive who came off as more of a leard character in the beginning. It's kinda trivial and not really a big deal but just kind of surprised me I guess. I think they were aiming to kind of surprise people with some of the deaths, like Paul and the little boy. Any thoughts?

Actually, I just saw this on cable: the deputy's killed at the end.

I don't remember seeing that. Either way the sheriff played by Jeffery DeMunn should have been kept alive longer IMO.

Yep the Deputy was snapped in half as he was pulled through what looks to be a book shelf. Ohhhh yeah he croaked.

This was a movie that wanted to break the stereotypical molds of horror movies (much like Psycho did). They set up false lead characters and killed them off, they killed children graphically, and they killed people that hadn't really done anything wrong (the sheriff, the waitress, the girl in the car, etc.). That's a big part of the reason why I liked the movie. Great special effects, great story, great soundtrack, and defying what you'd expect.

Wow. I didn't even realize that, but you're right.

I still feel sad the sheriff and the waitress went so fast. I thought they made a cute couple and I wanted them both to live longer. At least had a kiss before dying, lol.

Frankly, I'm shocked at the lot of you. Don't you know that not only does the a-hole deputy die quite spectacularly (snapped in half before being pulled through the barricade, as mentioned before), but that a-hole is the incredible melting man in ROBOCOP ("I know you! We killed you! You're DEAD!" brrrrp [rewind] "I know you! We killed you! You're DEAD!")?

Because it's a big Bob Marley fan.

Help me remember his death. I didn't even see the sheriff in the last half of the movie. He just disappeared.

When the diner's owner is in the phone box with the blob surrounding it, she sees the Sheriff's digesting body in The Blob, I don't think we actual saw the moment the Blob got himm

Jeffry DeMunn doesn't last long in horror movies/tv shows sadly.

Dale!

He lasted until the end in "The Haunting" 1991. He did get raped by a female demon. But loved him as Dale from "The Walking Dead."

It was probably done on purpose to throw the viewer off, just like how they set up Paul to be the main character and then killed him off early on.
