God this movie is depressing
I thought Interiors was rough, but there at least I could relate to some of the characters. This is an incredibly punishing movie.

i have to politely disagree. while the topic of the movie is a little heavy, let's look at the ending. gena rowlands' character realizes she has huge flaws as a person and decides, at 50, to try to heal the wounds of past relationships.
to come to such a realization about one self at that stage in life and to try to do something about it speaks volumes for that person's character. i found the ending of the movie inspiring because it gives hope that an old dog can learn new tricks.
ahhhh, the healing power of redemption.

I agree with the OP. I wanted and tried really hard to enjoy this intelligent, well-acted film. But about halfway through, the sadness of these people's lives(everyone seemed jaded, banal, or half-dead) seemed to permeate and I found it hard to enjoy. Sure, the main character woke up at the end but by the time she had cracked her first smile of the movie, my urge for this film to continue any longer was gone.
shareThanks for the agreement but I think we differ on one thing - I really can't say I dislike a movie that has such an effect on me emotionally. I may not have gotten the cinematic exhilaration that I got from Interiors, but I still can't in good conscience not recommend a movie just because it's depressing.

Ah, I know what you're saying. You are correct in saying that existentialism is suppose to be humanism, however life itself can become an incredible tragedy if you livein bad faith as the woman is this movie did for a great portion of her life. That aspect of the movie is quite depressing, although the ending is somewhat uplifting.

I think it's quietly, morally complex... powerful, devastating either. But the ending is very hopeful, IMHO. I wouldn't call it "depressing".

it's like a more narcissistic, sex obsessed Seinfeld mixed with Days of our lives suffering from a bad case of mental twitter. Almost every monologue was just describing what we were seeing on the screen.
