What Does the title mean?
Can anyone tell my what the title means?
shareI believe the title can have several interpretations, but I believe it works on three levels. (If you haven't seen this film yet, you can consider this a spoiler warning.)
At its most elemental, "Another Woman" refers to the character of Hope and how she impacts Marion's life. When Marion overhears Hope's sessions with her therapist, Marion sees herself as Hope and is reminded of her pregnancy as a young woman, which ended in abortion.
On another level, "Another Woman" refers to Ken's infidelity, first with Marion and later with Lydia. Both were the other woman at one point, and I suspect once he snags one, he'll be on to the next.
And finally, at its most profound, "Another Woman" refers to the awakening Marion has when Hope terminates her sessions with her therapist. Marion realizes the price she's paid for sabotaging relationships, particularly with Larry, and with this insight, she is free to become the other woman she would never allow herself to be before. In this regard, "Another Woman" has a very positive meaning.
This, of course, is strictly my interpretation, and you are free to embrace it or discard it as you see fit.

Thank you very much, Gideonj34!
shareWhat wonderful insights! I don't mean to discredit any of your interpretations, I just wanted to chime in with mine. After viewing the film several times (and I'm still captivated by it each time) I felt that "Another Woman" seemed to be referring to "yet another woman" from whom Marion is chronically, emotionally distant (e.g. Hope, Clair, Lydia, Lynn and Laura). Though she keeps everyone in her life at an emotional distance, her husband and brother included, she is slightly closer to Ken, Paul and her father, than with the women in her life. Marion seems to be yearning more for closeness towards women but she doesn't entirely realize this until she becomes obsessed with eavesdropping on Hope's sessions.
shareI agree with WarpedRecord's three suggestions although when applied to Marion herself, I saw her real self as 'another woman' from who she keeps herself separate. Like many of the film's symbols she fails to perceive herself as she is really, i.e. how she feels as she acts and how others experience her. With this I see Marion as deluded and another woman as a negative connotation regarding her even though in conclusion she seems on the verge of becoming perceptive and authentic.
Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence.share
Very good point on how Marion becomes "Another Woman" to connect with her true identity and shed some of her previous assumptions, PoppyTransfusion. I love the title because it encourages the viewer to think about what it means – just as I love this film, which I've seen several times and always find something new to take away with me.
