First of all, if it was my choice.. this Hollywood remake would be cancelled and buried for ever. But then I started thinking, and I simply can't think of any actor for Tetsuo or Kaneda.
I would prefer to see a group of young actors whom I've never heard of, or at the very least the type of 20-somethings that can pull off teenagers Hollywood relies on so much. I don't like the idea of making the main characters mid-30s, it seems like it'd take too much away from the story. I don't really follow celebrities, but I'd imagine there are a lot of people that could play Tetsuo. Hollywood has kind of embraced the damaged hero or villain, so I think they could pull that off. Kaneda is a problematic though because the brash, (over?)confident bravado is hard to garner sympathy, especially for the main hero. It seems to me that the manga managed this by balancing Kaneda and Kei. She tempered his bravado, and he was willing to listen to her because he wanted to impress her so badly. Alone, neither is a particularly strong character. Kei needs Kaneda's bravery and loyalty, and Kaneda needs Kei's sense of duty, honor, and sensibility. They grow each grow stronger as the characters play off each other. Again, I have a hard time imagining them being anything other than high school students, but the most important casting decision will be to build the characters of Kaneda and Kei to be equals. The decision on Tetsuo I think will take care of itself because his character is easier to understand.
Ken Watanabe looked like a descend colonel. Danny Glover or Mel Gibson would be great too. He's too old now, but Eminem would have been a very nice Tetsuo. Josh Hartnett a nice Kaneda. Whoopy Goldberg a cool Lady Myako. Di Caprio : Massaru Michael J Fox : The doc
