Just bought it, haven't seen it yet

I know it's risky, but I was able to find a really good special edition on Amazon for only $14.95. I took the risk of buying a movie I don't own because I live in a rural part of Oregon that is very hard to find any rentals in, and the internet out here is pretty unreliable.

That, and this movie was HIGHLY rated by everyone I asked about, and a lot of my friends who are fans of it are looking forward to watching it.

Any other recommendations? I'm really excited to watch it, and looking forward to all the special features!

If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you see it. Don't build up some monolithic image of this film in your head; that will only lead to disappointment. It's a good film, whether or not it's another 'Citizen Kane' is an opinion you will have to form on your own.

I did see it, and am very glad I took the time to buy it. Citizen Kane is not one of my top movies, but I do feel that Akira is an unrecognized classic among the mainstream populace in the U.S.

I highly recommend Blade Runner, you can get all versions of the movie pretty cheap. I'd say go for the "Final Cut", since they went back and completely remastered the movie, leaving it looking better than ever. If you're looking for other anime with similar themes, Ghost in the Shell (both the original movie and TV series) and Cowboy Bebop are well worth checking out.

Because sponges never have bad days.

Haha funny you mention Blade Runner! I'm watching both films back to back tonight!
