Would I like the manga of the movie?

I love the movie and I adored Full Metal Alchemist, but I thought Naruto was childish poop. I have no idea if I would like the manga of Akira but if it's even remotely like the movie, i.e. it's mature and not full of wide-eyed dopey smiles and animals who talk then I reckon I'd like it.

Anime tends to be very hit or miss with me, they are always either graphic, intelligent storytelling or childish doodles aimed at numptys like dragonball and pokemon.

Akira the movie basically took the first half of the manga and condensed it down. If you liked the movie, you'll probably enjoy the manga it was based on

I found the manga to be a very uneven experience. Parts are epic, parts are nonsensical, characters appear and vanish with no reason or explanation as to their sudden motives or abilities. It feels like a story being made up as it's told with no preset direction, story threads abandoned. Given that it was released over such a long period of time and the volumes are pretty expensive I'd be pretty unhappy if I'd just bought them all in one go today rather than one every year or so two decades ago.

The mood does change from adult to cartoony across parts, but in general the art and the books themselves are impressive objects.
