I'm amazed more anime didn't copy the light trails the gangs' motorcycle's left behind. It's such a cool stylized effect, I wish more animation had used it.

Yea it's very cool and memorable. Maybe every other animator respects akira too much and don't want to bite that effect.
shareI'd say it's just a pain in the butt to animate in traditional animation, but yeah, loved it in 'Akira' - just one of those unnecessary but cool little details. Beautiful film!
shareI agree, but after researching how they did it I can understand why. Apparently it required multiple exposures of transparent gel overlays which doesnt really replicate the same way when done digitally.
The amount of detail in this hand drawn animated film blows me away. Much of it is fairly standard, but parts of it (bike scenes, giant stuffed animals, the psychic battles and of course the end) are downright amazing. Direction is fantastic too, of course
