Am I the only one who likes the pioneer dub better?
I personally think the vices fit better...

Your WRONG AND DELUDED. Streamline dub is 1 billion times better and your a complete and total loser if you don't agree. Without that dub, anime would have been left to the bible grippers. Streamline IS and WILL forver be the greatest thing made in the 20th Century. Nothing will ever surpass it, so go back to your troll hole and burn any Pionner affiliated views you decide to to pollute the forum with next time.

Wow. You are truly a despicable piece of crap. If there is any justice in the world, you will get cancer and die a long, slow, horrible death.

I really don't see anything wrong with any of the english dubs, except that they could be better. But at least each new release offers english audiences a definitive reason to buy the next release.

Bennett The Sage isn't a high profile reviewer.
shareBoth have their ups and downs. There are scenes/voices that are played better in the Streamline version and vice versa with the Pioneer.
The one thing I can't stand with the Pioneer dub is the pronunciation. It sounds so stupid hearing English actors pronounce names with a Japanese accent...
Another issue is Tetsuo. Joshua Seth did a decent job, but he doesn't come close to Jan Rabson. Jan Rabson IS Tetsuo, I have to say he even did it better than the Japanese VA.
"Where'd you get the beauty scar tough guy? Eatin' pineapple?"
My main beef is with Kaneda though, I could forgive everything about the streamline version except that Kaneda sounds like a damn retard the whole time. I thought I was crazy then I asked my friend and he really does sound like he has down syndrome. I like the voice acting for Kaneda and the Colonel a lot in the pioneer dub. I agree about tetsuo.

Here are some anime fan comments in regards to Streamline vs Pioneer dub:
'The Pioneer dub is just a generic anime dub in a can complete with Johnny Yong Bosch. The "Streamline" dub is far more memorable and contains a lot of character, even if the translation leaves a bit to be desired'.
'Pioneer destroyed Akira when they cast the voice actor of Vash The Stampede of tri-gun origin. And other actors who are known as big players in tri-gun ect.'
'OMG & soooo much better than the 2001 vesion!!'
'I really like the Streamline dub. Tetsuo's one of the characters that fits perfectly in this dub especially his screams & moans.'
how does that tell me where you stand?
If you bothered to read the comments, you should know I stand with superiority, the ultimate version, the version thats so radical and mind bending, that I shall spell it in uppercase - STREAMLINE. It's perfection and beauty is unmatched in ambience and tone. Every TRUE Akira fan will agree with me on this.

no u!
I like the Streamline version better also. Only by a little bit though. Sorry man.
Stay classy psychotic nerds. -Thradar
I didn't call you a ffag, that other queer. Calling someone a none fan just because they like one dub over the other and clearly stating the streamline is superior is preposterous!

I have never watched this movie dubbed at all. I prefer watching Japanese films with the original Japanese voice track and subtitles. There is a tendency to lose certain details in the dubbed versions...not always, but often.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
Streamline was better. I mean they replaced the great Cam Clark(Leonardo, Liquid Snake) for Johnny Yong Bosch. An actor who brings nothing to his roles(apart from Vash I guess). Streamline gave it a more gritty feel and the voiced suited the well. I mean when you hear "KANEDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "TESTUO!!!!!!!!!!!!" you think Streamline Akira.

I thought the original Dub was absolutely horrendous, I actually felt like switching to the original version
"The stuff that dreams are made of."
so I'm assuming you don't like the pioneer? I thought the original was horrendous aswell, though, i don't think the new dub is a masterpiece, it is alot better in my opinion, particularly with the colonel, who sounded like a retard originally, and kaneda. Though I usually end up just watching the movie in japanese.
I like the Pioneer Dub more mainly because I saw it first that and I think it's more ..profesional I guess, I then re-watched the movie with the streamline dub I was blown a way by how bad it is, Kaneda and especially Tetsuo sound like there in their 40's the Espers sound like a human frog hybrid.
And I don't know how to explain it , but the delivery in some lines just doesn't sound right, it never seems to fin it maybe i'm on my own on this one but it was just plain awful. I'm gonna assume some fans prefer it because it's the version they grew up on and loved for 10 years I can respect that. But I must say the original Japanese version is the best.
"The stuff that dreams are made of."
That's what I think too. The pioneer dub is far superior, and I honestly think people that think otherwise are basing their feelings on nostalgia. I mean, I even saw the streamline dub first and remember thinking, man this is really bad, i hope they have a different dub. Then I bought the blu-ray and was thoroughly pleased to know they used the pioneer on the bluray. They really got most of the voices spot on in the pioneer dub.
I prefer the original dub as well, I have it on VHS and looking to get it ripped onto DVD, they want an arm and a leg for it though, like 50 bucks.
My favourite lines were when Tetsuo is sitting on Kaneda's bike marvelling at it,
and Kaneda says something like "That bike will chew you up and spit you out!"
Pioneer changed it and it totally ruined it for me. Pioneer dub was good with timing and maybe was more accurate in translation, but nostalgia wins out with me. Akira was my first anime and it still blows me away. The Blu Ray should have included both dubs, little things like that please fans.
Nope you are not. The Pioneer dub is way more professional and accurate to the source material.
I saw the 2001 Pioneer dub first, and when I watched a decent amount of portions of the 1989 Streamline dub, and watched some of the Japanese track with subtitles literally translating that Japanese track,
So I cannot accept the Streamline dub, when it fails to express really important or special pieces of speech.
Stuff like "So, Tetsuo wants a bike, huh?" vs "I'm gonna send Yamagata his wheels" are the type of crucial difference that makes the new dub more respectful of the movie in a cultural way. The initial dubbing of this movie made it seem like Kaneda was crashing Yamagata's bike to be passive-aggressive to Tetsuo, wherever Tetsuo was at that moment. In the completely redone dubbing, you get a more accurate and better side of Kaneda, because he is sending Yamagata his wheels.
Plus some of the lines in streamline are just strangely pronounced.
The Pioneer dub is a made for the money effort that suckered in weeaboos with accurate pronounciations, a more faithful translation, and voices from popular anime titles.
"I'm here to warn you. You must not abuse the power you've been given." vs. "You shouldn't use your power in this way, for it is not correct." Even if the Pioneer dub is more accurate here, so what? It sounds awkward.
As for the bike scene, Kaneda was angry at Tetsuo for what he did- he asked for Yamagata's bike right after Kai informed him that Tetsuo wanted to know where Kaneda's bike was.
