WTF? This is one of the best Sci-fi/Animated movies I've ever seen. For the love of Tetsuo, why is this not on Top 250 and some mediocre indian films are? Anybody care to explain?

Read the sentence ommitted in your quote. Shawshank is pretty self contained and coherent compared to Akira. The reason Akira works, and was so hugely successful was its direction, stylistic choices, use of color, groundbreaking animation etc. Storywise the movie is a cluster*beep* of truly epic proportions, incomplete without the accompanying source material.

I actually agree with you. The animation is some of the best ever. But story wise the manga kills the movie by LOOOOOONG shot. If they were to do this today, they would've made Akira a long running mini series instead of a movie.
