No awards for Kelly McGillis?

I don't think Kelly McGillis gets enough credit for how good she was in this movie, she is a really good actress IMO.

McGillis was well cast; but I just don't think she has the acting chops of her co-star Foster. She tends to sit at one level and while she can command your attention, she doesn't seem to have the layers or nuances of a more skilled actress. Perhaps it has more to do with the roles she chose, or in this case, she was playing a lawyer and those roles are usually a dime a dozen and not usually that spectacular or different. Watch the scene where Foster busts in on her dinner party in the early part of the film and look at her reaction to Foster balling her out. She looks more in awe\shock of Foster's acting, rather than a genuine and natural reaction to what she is hearing within her own character. McGillis was being self-conscious.

She's as good if not better than Foster

Please explain how she is better than Foster. I have already given some reasoning behind McGillis's performance.

I said shes as good if not better. the part is more difficult IMO-its the "straight" man part. She came across as real to me. Foster's portrayal was good, but a little affected.

I thought McGillis played or made an excellent lawyer in the film. Yes, it was the straight man part and her character that is fighting to fix a wrong, to help someone else achieve justice that was initially denied her, could be part of the reason you thought she was better. It is what she stood for.

Horses for courses of course; but McGillis didn't have the depth or nuance that Foster instilled in her "real" and "gritty" performance. I would say, any other talented actress at the time like Kathleen Turner, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, or Debra Winger—who are all superiors actress to McGillis—could have pulled of the lawyer role with aplomb. This average film worked as well as it did because of Foster's performance, and I can't imagine another actress of the time in her role and doing it so well.

Cool beans!

McGillis' role wasn't particularly demanding, compared to Foster's. It just wasn't that much of a stretch for a pro to pull off.

Did she do some particularly impressive acting in this? Maybe I went to the bathroom during that scene.
