It's getting rebooted on Netflix!

It's true!

Oh, please please don't fuck this up! Hopefully they do it right and hopefully it also gets more than a single season.

reply

I know it's going to suck. The Farina version wasn't all that great.

reply

Damn, just going straight in with the negativity, huh?

I have faith. Yes, the Farina version was shitty. But the original show was literally perfect. And a lot of good people are involved with this.

reply

You need a host with a creepy voice and charisma like Stack. That's going to be difficult. Also, you just know they're gonna do full-on dramatisations of the stories instead of simply images accompanying the narration.

And one case per episode? What a waste. Look, I'm glad unsolved cases are getting attention, but I have my doubts about its entertainment value. I might prefer Disappeared.

reply

Regarding "full- on dramatizations instead of simply images," how long has it been since you last revisited the original series? Reenactments were a staple of the show from the very beginning. Are you remembering it as a Ken Burns documentary with Stack just narrating over still photos and the occasional talking head or something?

Regarding one case, that gave me pause as well. It's certainly a departure from the original series. I think I'd prefer three to four as the original did, but perhaps the idea is to go deeper.

reply

No, I remember a show where we saw actors portraying the events with the focus on the narration and interviews and hardly any dialogue being heard. Nowadays we get these dramatized (and even fictionalized) minimovies. When was the last time you saw a crime show?

I could do without the lost loves and UFO stories, but at least spend that time on other unsolved murders or disappearances.

reply

The last true crime show I watched was The Innocent Man. If you're not familiar with it, it's based on John Grisham's only true crime book. It features reenactments, but no dialogue.

I'm with you in the lost loves, but the UFO and other paranormal stories are among my favorites.

In any case, I'd say be optimistic and go in with an open mind. There's no point in deciding ahead of time that you already hate it.

reply

If you watch the crime shows on Investigation Discovery or Crime & Investigation, you'll notice it's become a trend.

I'm just being a realist. We'll see.

reply

Boo

reply

Hey, I'm prepared to give it a chance!

reply

Stratego has a point. This sounds like a version of what they do on Investigation Discovery. I enjoyed the interviews with witnesses and victims on the old show, I can´t see myself watching an hour-long dramatized re-enactment of one case.
The changes to the Farina version were bad but basically it was just old Unsolved Mysteries with a new host and new music, this honestly sounds worse than the Farina version.

reply

I don't think we have nearly enough information at this point to draw any conclusions or have any assumptions.

reply

True but Im just going by what the article you linked says.

reply

I could be wrong, but I did not infer from the article that they will NOT be interviewing witnesses and victims. If they don't do that, then I agree it's lame, but I am assuming they will.

It does suck it's only one case per episode, though. My guess is that they only have a handful of cases that are ready for production and they are trying to get an entire season from those cases. But who knows.

reply

The guy who narrates some of the Geico commercials has a very similar Robert Stack voice, that may be an option lol.

reply

The Dennis Farina version would run a lot of cases from the original series that never got solved or were solved after the Robert Stack years ended and updated us. Perhaps the reboot will do the same.

reply

From the article: "It’s too early to go into much detail, but we’ve had our research producers look into possible stories, and they’ve found some excellent ones which can be ready to go quickly.”

Just re-running the old cases again would be super-lame. No one wants that.

They've actually been continuing to collect new cases over the years on the website:

reply

I would love to see new cases, but I'd also like to know what became of some of the old ones; however Google will provide those answers. Whenever it happens I hope it's worth the watch.

reply

Actually, you have a better option than Google.

Amazon has almost the entire original run of Unsolved Mysteries available for Prime members right now, and those episodes have been given updates (the text kind at the end of the episode) where appropriate. I've started the series from the beginning. Almost through Season 1.

reply

I don't have Prime, but I may look into that. Thanks!

reply

If you're interested, you can now watch episodes for free on Pluto TV. I assume you've heard of it, but if not just go to pluto.tv.

There's an Unsolved Mysteries channel that does nothing but air episodes of UM. The only downside is that there are commercials.

reply

I actually didn't know about this.
Thanks for the heads up. :)

reply

No problem!

But I actually found something that you might think is even better. It turns out that there is an official Unsolved Mysteries channel on YouTube that has the full first 13 Robert Stack seasons with no commercials!

The commercials on Pluto really started to annoy me so this was godsend.

Nice!! Thank you!

reply

Needs Christopher Lambert as the host.

reply

That's not a bad suggestion actually. Would watch.

reply

It's an excellent suggestion!!!!!!!!!!
