DeNiro was great. Costner was a wimpy washout.

I don't think you understood the movie or the character. Look at the bat to the head scene. That perfectly sums up how terrifying the character actually is.

The irony of it all, is that the real Al Capone was said to not be as horrible and reprehensible of a human being as Robert DeNiro depicted him in the movie:

While Al Capone certainly was a ruthless mobster in real life, he wasn't as bad as he's depicted in this movie. The film's Capone has no problem with killing kids, but the real Capone tried to avoid hurting bystanders and if some did get hurt, he'd pay their hospital bills.

In other words, while Capone in real life, wasn't exactly a model citizen, he wasn't exactly adjacent to being the devil incarnate either. The movie obviously wanted to be more "black and white" by letting us know us know straight up that Capone is the big bad guy and needs to be taken down at all costs.

Maybe they should do a Scorsese treatment of Al Capone along with narration and tracking shots?

Lamest villain in cinematic history.

His role in the film was little more than a talking prop. A human MacGuffin.

Deniro was great and memorable in this.

DeNiro as Al Capone is hilarious because he pretty much plays him like a comic book supervillain or a Dick Tracy gangster. He's kind of like what Al Pacino would later bring as Big Boy Caprice in the 1990 Dick Tracy movie with Warren Beatty. Both play these over-the-top, arrogant, grandiose bad guys, who are so entertaining that it's really hard to completely dislike them.
