This has got to be Woody Allen's best film, all things considered. There are a couple of exchanges between characters in this movie which are CLASSIC, but my favorite has to be...

RADIO AD DIRECTOR: No no, "get regular with relax, rel-aax."

SALLY WHITE: What's my motivation?

RADIO AD DIRECTOR: Think laxative; you need one.

Anyone else?

To the best of my recollection:

Have you seen mama's teeth, they were in a glass full of water yesterday?
Yeah, the kids were playing hockey with them.
Hockey?!
Yeah, they are about the size of a puck.

Hey War-Ped! Remember when I told you I only liked a couple Woody Allen Pictures? I'd forgotten how old I'd got. geezzz I'm watching "Radio Days" How did this beauty escape me? The music is truly wonderful and the ...Everything works in this film! Everything! I watched "Shadows and Fog" the other day and... another delight. Yes, I take it all back. I am a great fan of Woody Allan pictures!

Favorite line so far? The "Who's Pearl Harbor" one and

"I want to name him Lional"

"Lional! no son of mine is going to be called Lional!"

I want to name him a name with an "L", after cousin Louie"

"How'bout Louse?

reply

Did you noticed the cameo by Kitty Carlisle Hart singing "They're Either Too Young or Too Old"? There's some great talent in this film.

I have a copy of "Shadows and Fog," but I haven't seen that film in almost 20 years. Time to give it another watch.

I love Woody both for his comedies and dramas. Most of his films are a mixture of both. My favorite film of his is "Another Woman" which stars our lovely Gena Rowlands as a frustrated middle-aged woman eavesdropping on Mia Farrow. It's beautifully filmed and heartbreakingly rendered.

reply

I saw "Another Woman". I really enjoyed it. I didn't even know Woody Allen had directed that!

You mentioned to me "The Sweet Hereafter" and the fact that you loved Atom Egoyan. I have to admit that I have allowed him slip through my fingers. I will, on your trusted recommendation, go and find these films of his!

reply

Yes "Another Woman" is one of Woody Allen's less Woody-esque movies. He doesn't even appear in it, though he's appearing less in films a lot more these days.

I love Atom Egoyan, but I hope you won't hate me if he's not to your liking. His films are rather tough to crack at first, with scenes out of order and characters intentionally obscured. But if you have the time and patience, you might find his films as beautiful and deeply moving as I do. "The Sweet Hereafter" is a great place to start because it's the most accessible, and if you like that definitely check out "Exotica," my favorite film of the '90s and quite possibly my favorite film ever.

reply

Exotica sounds like my kind of movie! I went over on Ebert's site and read the glowing review of this film. I absolutely adore Mia Kirshner! She was Betty Short in "The Black Dahlia". The first time I ever seen her was in a film with Keith Carradine made in Eastern Europe somewhere. It was called.... ahhh... I forget.

Anyway, As soon as I began reading the review Exotica "Dancing At the Blue Iguana" came into my mind. (that's a quite interesting film if you give it some time) I also began thinking of "The Crossing Guard". But This film undoubtedly is one beautiful piece of work and I'm glad you have turned me on to it. I have seen and have enjoyed to the fullest "Where the Truth Lies" with Colin Firth and Kevin Bacon as the Lewis and Martin-like team with that deadly secret. I knew about The Great Herafter and have begun watching it a couple of times but my "mind wasn't there" at the time so I opted for something a bit more easy on the brains. Hey War-Ped - we keep this up and we'll be finishing each other sentences!

reply

If you liked "Where the Truth Lies," I think you'd love "Exotica." Unfortunately, the film came out about the time of "Striptease," and it takes place in a strip club, so it was marketed as a sex film – which I find very offensive when you know the whole plot. Much of it does take place in a strip club, but the reasons for the participants going there have nothing to do with sex. I don't want to spoil too much of the film, but suffice it to say there's a lot going on under the surface, and each time I watch it I discover something new.

Mia Kirshner is excellent in "Exotica," but the real revelation is Bruce Greenwood, who plays a much different character than in "The Sweet Hereafter" (and the new "Star Trek" film, for that matter). His performance is one of exquisite yearning and sensitivity, and ... well, I'd better stop before I give too much away.

I think the film with Mia and Keith Carradine is "Out of the Cold" (I didn't see it, but I cheated and looked it up). I have seen "The Crossing Guard," which is a heartbreaking film. I haven't seen "Dancing at the Blue Iguana," but I see Elias Koteas is in that as well (he's the DJ in "Exotica"). Atom Egoyan films are very much in the style of Robert Altman of yesterday and Paul Thomas Anderson of today – though he's even more cryptic and distinctly Canadian.

I hope you enjoy "Exotica," and as an added bonus, it features some great Leonard Cohen songs. Everybody knows that you've been discreet, but here were so many people you just had to meet without your clothes ...

Hey War-Ped - They have Exotica over on youtube! I spent a couple hours over there watching it earlier. It's so hynotic I kept dropping off but man, it's beautiful! I will definately watch it several times more to get everything. I love the Cohen song they use... beautiful score and photography. Everything works. The film is magnifique! They play it in 14 segments of about ten minutes a piece. I was very surprised to find it. Thanks for turning me on to this guy. I know what actor you're referring to.

Yes, I saw Hard Candy. That was a unique hour and a half.

Edmond's just coming on. This is a film I have seen about three times. I don't know why I''m drawn to it. I love Macy.

Tonite was a little off because there is some weirdo from the Farrah Fawcett board who sends me porn of himself in the inbox. I don't know if there's anything I can do about it or not. I left my email address exposed in my profile not understanding that some people aren't fit to have a place to post anything. I locked the guy out but he does it another way. I didn't know about the anonymous email stuff you can send a stranger in the mail. I guess the stuff can be traced but... maybe he'll stop.

Wow, they have the whole "Exotica" on YouTube? That's amazing, but probably a copyright violation. I'd definitely recommend renting the DVD or maybe seeing it on Comcast if you can – those YouTube movies are kind of sketchy. Bruce Greenwood also played JFK in "Thirteen Days," which I also saw this week. He's a terrific actor who, like Steve Buscemi, creates completely different personas depending on the role.

"Edmond" is a chilling film, and I respect William H. Macy for taking the role. He's terrifying in it. I should have mentioned him in my earlier "Henry" post. Julia Stiles is very good in that film too.

Sorry the Farrah folks are getting to you. I never give out my e-mail address to the public, and I'm always guarded about the personal details I reveal in the boards. I certainly would never respond to those "age poll" threads. Most people don't even know whether I'm male or female. Sometimes even I can't tell ...

reply

Julia Stiles plays his wife, doesn't she? I totally agree that this is a chilling film and a very, very courageous one also. The first time I saw it it I about fell out of my chair! When he went after that pimp verbally lke that. Dang, You know, somewhere deep in all of us there's that one rotten spot. I sat there wondering what it would take for mine to emerge. And that scene with the old lady on the train... the one in the hat..

I love David Mamet stuff. I thought Glengarry Glenross was amazing. Jack Lemon just blew me away as usual but Pacino too and Spacey.. all of them.. even that filthy bastard Baldwin was good! I don't like Ed Harris tho. I was happy when they gave him the "rat" role

Bruce Greenwood... I didn't see Thirteen Days but he was in "I'm Not There" wasn't he? He played Garrett? I thought that guy looked familiar. He's amazing and I hope he catches on. He deserves more lead roles

You Pick The Queen ..You Win.

reply

Julia Stiles plays his victim during an especially graphic scene. I remember she takes him home, and he totally freaks out, starts yelling and slashing. It's really quite a gruesome scene, and I think a bathtub is involved.

David Mamet is an excellent writer, and "Glengarry Glen Ross" is his finest work. There's nothing but tension in that film. Jack Lemmon is alternately sleazy and sympathetic, a fine performance by perhaps the finest actor ever. And who can forget Alec Baldwin and the lovely set of steak knives?

Yes, Bruce was Garrett in "I'm not There." A great actor who seems to disappear into his roles.

I'm going to bed now, so I'll be out of touch for several hours. Have a great night, get some sleep, and don't let the bastards get you down!

Yeah,Little Julia Stiles is Genna the waitress.. I mean actress. I'm watching that one right now! Uh-Oh..she is no more.... red knife! red knife! red knife! "now look what you've bloody fuccing done"

I'm up all night.. every night.... I work nights.

Sometimes I forget what sex I am too. Sometimes I even have to lay down and look in the mirror to see if it's all still there.
