Silly macho behaviour by supposed ''Spec Ops'' troops?

So, aside from the Hollywood posturing, cheesy one-liners and macho-homo-erotic muscle bragging, an unlikely team of Spec Ops drop into the jungle to investigate another missing team.

When Blain is killed by the predator, they all unleash an unreasonable amount of macho ammo for 60-90 seconds at something one of them claims to have seen? All of earth now knows they're there?

No verified target at the time they open up. Would a real team have fired at all, and remained quiet?

Or, if they fired at this non-target, perhaps save ammo and ''quick bursts'' like Hicks says in Aliens?

They got scared and freaked out. Plus it's homage to earlier in the movie when Billy says the U.S Soldiers under Hopper fired in all directions. Same thing ended up happening to them. Also that's one of my favorite scenes.

Correct on all 3 accounts.

They’re dealing with an enemy they don’t understand and has already killed two of the team, it’s time for fresh tactics.

reply

No, real operators would preserve ammo and not give away their position like that.

Actually, in those days, real operators would go cyclic like that to gain fire superiority when dealing with what the team perceived as an ambush. Felt right to me. Today could be different, though I'm not so sure it would be, but back then, gain immediate fire superiority and break through ambush. Tactics were actually sound until the end of the scene when they paused and waited for additional contact instead of breaking contact themselves.
