Why did the Predator come to earth? Why is it killing people?

I enjoyed the film, but the villain's motive/intentions were never defined (unless I missed something).

Is there a canon explanation for what the Predator was all about? If not, give me your take. Cheers.

Watch it again and pay attention this time. Enjoy!

Roger Ebert certainly paid attention (it was his job, after all). He said in his review:

The predator of the movie's title is a visitor from space; that's established in the opening scene. What it is doing in the jungle is never explained [...] Why would an alien species go to all the effort to send a creature to Earth, just so that it could swing from trees and skin American soldiers?

I enjoyed the film, but never identified a motive. Seems I'm not alone.

^^^^ This just shows that for all his fame as a critic, he's just another person with an opinion (like arseholes, everybody has one). It's clear he WASN'T paying attention. You don't need to be Einstein to figure it out but it is pretty much spelled out for the viewer. The girl even says that in the hottest years men go missing. Their bodies are found mutilated, skinned etc.... Typical hunter behaviour. Arnie even says the girl wasn't killed because she was unharmed...no sport.

Ebert's question meant "why is the predator in the jungle an not an urban environment"? Which was a good question. Your question, not so much.

reply

Jungle because of the climate. Like the girl said, when it grows hot! Again, pay attention, like 'ol jawless should have.

reply

Mature and enlightening answer. Thanks

I'm more concerned about your barely watching this classic. I probably saw it as a kid about 20 times. Please tell me you've seen Blood Sport, The Thing, Alien, Highlander, amongst others...

reply

The Thing and Alien are classics. Highlander is fun. Van Damme seems committed to making unwatchable movies, but maybe Bloodsport is better - I'll check it out.

I just never crossed paths with Predator as a kid, and actively avoided it as an adult because the reviews were horrible. I understand it's been reappraised as something of a classic in recent years.

You are.missing out! Watch it again, pay good attention and I'm sure you'll have a fun time with a sense making movie.

reply

A true classic would be Fail Safe (1964). Most people don't even know it exists. Black and White terrifying and excellent movie. There was a remake in 2000 that was shot live, it was alright.

reply

A diluted facsimile of Dr Strangelove. Nice for a rainy day maybe..in the 70's!

reply

Actually, Dr Strangelove and Fail Safe are 2 sides of the same coin. Neither movie is a copy of the other. It comes down to wanting to see a silly movie or a serious one.

reply

The "villain's" motivations/intentions were clearly defined in the movie.

I'm sorry but you gotta be stupid not to be able to figure it out.

reply

Again, I'm in good company with the "stupid" Roger Ebert. He didn't get it either.

reply

And he is one of the few who didn't get it.

1. The title: Predator.

2. That it only kills humans with weapons. As Dutch says, no sport.

3. Anna identifies it. In the hottest years it comes. She gives it a native name and then translates it: "That which makes trophies of men." (I may have the exact translation off since I haven't watched it in a year or so)

4. The scene showing it polishing the skull.

Everything points to it being a hunter. How Roger Ebert didn't see it I don't know. However, given many reviewers antipathy to SF and action films it doesn't overly surprise me that he wasn't really paying attention or refused to put together the clues because, well those types of films are "stupid."

Predator heard there was auditions for porno flicks on earth, but instead landing into Hollywood he accidentally landed into middle of a smelly dirty jungle.

Without a map he was lost and got angry and frustfrated and started to kill people.

reply

I concluded the Predator was a sportsman (sports THING?) looking for the ultimate challenge.

reply

As you said, its the same reason big game hunters fly to Africa.

reply

DUDE IS HUNTING FOR SOME TROPHIES AND SOME WAR STORIES.

reply

It got lost. Maybe the predator and his buddies were spoken up and got stoned. Then one of them ended up breaking free from the mothership and ended up on earth. Perhaps the predator since it landed in South America was looking to score some cocaine and fresh bud and thought it had to kill all the humans to accomplish it's mission.
