Roger Ebert certainly paid attention (it was his job, after all). He said in his review:
The predator of the movie's title is a visitor from space; that's established in the opening scene. What it is doing in the jungle is never explained [...] Why would an alien species go to all the effort to send a creature to Earth, just so that it could swing from trees and skin American soldiers?
^^^^ This just shows that for all his fame as a critic, he's just another person with an opinion (like arseholes, everybody has one). It's clear he WASN'T paying attention. You don't need to be Einstein to figure it out but it is pretty much spelled out for the viewer. The girl even says that in the hottest years men go missing. Their bodies are found mutilated, skinned etc.... Typical hunter behaviour. Arnie even says the girl wasn't killed because she was unharmed...no sport.
