Wouldn't Hawkins's glasses have been a liability?
I don't think contact lenses were widely available in the late 1980s and certainly not laser corrective surgery so his need of glasses is understandable. They could be protective at, as my dad's big thick glasses were when he worked construction. Hawkins however was maneuvering through a jungle. It's amazing they stayed on his head, unless they had a strap. If he really needed them and they were lost or broken he could be at a big disadvantage not being able to see things either far away or close up.
