Wonderful movie

This is a wonderful movie but it's heartbreaking to watch it. Lasse has been so beaten down by life and he wants to be a protector of Pelle but it seems to work the other way around. Pelle seems absolutely fearless when trying to prove himself to his classmates while he sees Lasse back down from every challenge he is faced with.

The sad part about watching movies like this is that although the hero?(Pelle) gets to leave and pursue his life, there are several instances where good and innocent people are punished, or worse, for just wanting to be happy (Erik and Anna & Nils, for example). Fortunately, though, we occasionally see some ironic justice, Mrs. Kongstrup in this case, meted out.

All in all it's great storytelling.

Emperor: Tell me how he died.
Captain Algren: I will tell you...how he lived.

My favourite part is where Lasse gets involved with Mrs Olsen. He finally gets what he yearned for. You can actually see the spring in his step on the way home after spending the night with her.

But then that too is snatched away from him...

Yes, I found it unforgettable as well for the way it captures a Hardyesque bitterness of crushed ambitions. Bille August does a brilliant job of detailing the unremitting hardship and occasional brutality of 19th century farm work, relieved only by sex and drunkenness.

The acting is superb as well. IMO, no face in European cinema is more eloquent of suffering than von Sydow's.
