Great movie - but actually not the original filming of the story.

I do not know wether you are aware, that this great, oscar-winning movie was not the first filming of this story.
Actually in 1986, the East German DEFA filmed the same story on the island of Ruegen. It is also a very nice version, which in fact inspired director Bille August to film his version one year later. If you can get it, watch it. I heard there is a DVD out now with the original German soundtrack and English subtitles.
I have got both versions and I do like both of them.
The East German version "Pelle der Eroberer" is also mentioned in imdb.

Do you know where a DVD of the original can be found?

I've heard of the earlier film (I believe it was a tv movie), but I never saw any DVD release information on it.
I would appreciate any info you have about a DVD release (PAL or NTSC; any region).
