This film, Pelle the Conquerer was originally 160 minutes, when released at the New Your Film Festival. I have the 150 minute DVD version. Does anyone know if the full, uncut version is available anywhere in the world, in any format?

You're right, the movies should be at a different length, but the American version should be longer. So his version is cut somewhere, no matter what. That is if his DVD is not made with a PAL-master, which would result in some serious ghosting effects due to the 1:3 pulldown.
shareOften on arthouse releases a standards conversion from the PAL master is made, so that the lost two-and-a-half minutes per hour is carried over onto the NTSC master. NTSC discs like Z are good examples of this kind of 'reverse' standards conversion from PAL to NTSC.

A different framerate would not EVER make the movie longer. They don't just play it faster, because of a different framerate. It would be properly converted to that framerate instead, keeping everything the exact same real speed. It would be very unproffesional to time-stretch a movie. Who could bare to watch that?
PAL is 25 fps. NTSC (USA) is 30 fps. If you were to just play it that much faster, that would be 20 percent faster, wich means a 152 minute movie would become 182 minutes. And think about that one seccond would become 1,2 seccond. That would be noticable.
Wow, two years later, and people are still responding. Unfortunately, I still have the version that is missing several screen minutes,and still have no answers as to getting the 'uncut' version. I still want it- A movie purist...

There are several films like this, joninfinity.
Most people find confusion when the old vhs film reviews would list a movie as being 150 minutes, then the dvd would come out as 145 minutes.
However, I've had a couple films on both vhs and dvd and watched them simultaneously. Nothing is edited, the dvd simply plays a tiny bit faster and hence it makes up for a few minutes over a 2 hour period.
It's difficult to comprehend, much less to explain.
I've read the classic novel this film was adapted from, so of course every version will seem extremely "cut".

A 160 minute theatrical runtime would make a 153 minute PAL runtime (due to 4% speed up from 24 fps in the theaters to 25 fps on a PAL system). On a NTSC system (30 fps), the conversion is done differently making a 160 minute theatrical runtime 160 minutes on NTSC.
My guess is that you have the PAL version and nothing is missing.

There was a now deleted PAL DVD with a running time of 150 minutes, and I've noted that it contains some scenes that are missing on the NTSC DVD which has just about the same running time. This means, the PAL DVD should contain the full version - 157 original minutes (which is the running time stated here at IMDb) become 150 with the 4% speed up (and yes, the pitch is indeed higher) while the NTSC DVD is in the correct speed but with 7 minutes missing.
Sadly, the currently available PAL DVD is just 144 minutes, meaning it also is the cut version (sped up) - however it's not the exact same cut as the NTSC version! It would indeed be interesting to know about the origin of the cut versions, and why they are being favoured over the full one.
