Didn't Hurley have to lose twice?
If it was double elimination, shouldn't Hurley have to lose twice?

Are you sure you had to lose twice, I don't remember hearing that in the movie, (sarcasm obviously). Anyway, I would think that the final two contestants would just have one match to determine the winner. I mean imagine if both of them were undefeated coming in, that means they could possibly have three more matches before crowning a champ and I don't think they would want to do that.
shareI dunno - I play professional foosball and just about all of our events are double elimination. Once you go to the loser's bracket, you have to work your way back to the finals again.
If you win the first set of the finals, you have to play another set...because the winner of the winner's side still has to lose twice. That's fair.
Ummm, you've gotta be joking!!! Professional foosball??!!! There's no such thing....playing in your frat house and being the winner doesn't make you a pro foosball player, LMAO!!!
shareDoc80, Just got to the beginning of the competition and they do say that if you lose once you still have a shot and that it is a double elimination.
faith begins at the end of your comfort zone.
I always wondered if Grizzly lost twice. I just know that Hawk beat em in the rematch, but I don't remember anyone else beating him.
shareNot sure if this is correct but it's possible that Hurley was disqualified after punching Hawks in the nose during the final match, which would have given him his first loss. Bull was probably so confident in his ability to win that he was willing to take a DQ just so he could send Hawks that little "message", knowing he wouldn't be eliminated by doing so.
shareFirst of all, watch the tournament scene again. The announcer REPEATEDLY says that it's a double elimination tournament. He even went into detail with something along the lines of, "if you lose once, you still have a shot to win." However, with that being said, Bull didn't have to lose twice. The double elimination applies to every match EXCEPT for the championship match.
shareIn a team sport I get the losers bracket double elimination. I would also get that in the finals it is one match too a winner.
shareI could be wrong, because it's been a very long time since I watched this movie, but doesn't the announcer at some point after the qualifying rounds say something like "now it's single elimination?" I swear that I remember hearing something like that when there were only eight finalists left...

I saw this again the other day for the first time in a long time. I have to amend my previous statement because the announcer never says that it's now single elimination, like I thought I remembered. I'm pretty sure that I heard him say that Hurley hadn't lost in five years, though, several times...
shareThe double-elimination stipulation didn't apply to the championship match.
