Just found this 20th anniversary DVD at my local record swap. I couldn't believe it. 5.99 and I had only seen it one time. I am huge into Goonies, Explorers, Gremlins, The Burbs, Fright Night, Lost Boys and couldn't believe Monster Squad had slipped by me for so long. The type of movie that of course gets better with every watch.

The music in the very beginning sort of reminds me of Are You Afraid of the Dark as well..

Anyone know of any other movies or shows like this?

I'm sure there aren't too many more. Came across a movie called Shadow Zone which appears to be a decent made for TV movie. Watched some of Joe Dante's episodes of Eerie Indiana and those weren't bad. Dante's Matinee is on the list for me as well.

Yea the only one of these I haven't seen is the Gate. Definitely looking for movies that are on the scary side too. I need to check out the Gate.

Just looked up The Gate. Holy crap, thanks for mentioning that because I have been trying to remember the name of that movie forever. I remember really enjoying it when I was a kid.

The gate was the first horror movie I ever saw it freaked me right out. I think i was like 5. Its on Netflix streaming now. Sadly there is no movie like monster squad. Its one in a million and all around awesome

I completely forgot to mention The Midnight Hour, which is very similar to The Monster Squad and precedes it by two years. My negligence can be attributed to the fact that it's been languishing in OOP hell for what feels like an eternity.

WaxWork is Amazing! (I seriously love it. )

Paranorman was pretty amazing as well.
Monster house was great.
Trick r treat... amaizing
Fright Night
Night of the demons
Ginger snaps was great too

You could even say Return of the Living dead. That movie is not about kids, but it is about a group of teenagers getting into trouble so, it kind of fits the whole "group of teens going against monsters" theme.

One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.
