Eugene's character...completely useless

Seriously, why are a bunch of pre-teens hanging with a 6 or 7 year old who adds nothing to the group? Love this movie but I always felt like he was unnecessary except for his note to the Army (which is probably the campiest thing in this entire movie, ... that they actually show up as a result).

They didn't need another "cute kid" Phoebe had that covered.

Come on "Creature stole my Twinkie" is one of the funniest lines in the movie.

I found the scene with his father and the Mummy in his closet funnier but they could have just as easily added that as him being a random kid in the neighborhood for that, not a member of the squad. Why would 12 year olds have someone so young in their club? Would have made more sense if he was maybe Sean's cousin or something.

Perhaps it was to show that while The Monster Squad may have been sexist, they were not age-ist.

I thought it had to do with the tree fort being behind his house, and he always has snacks.

He's got a dog.

Can't stop the signal.

You are right. Eugene was useless and the only way he'd really be in the Monster Club would be if he was Sean, Patrick or Horace's little brother. When he sends for the Army with crayons and they show up at the end asking for "Eugene", I cringed.

reply

Haha I just realized the army guys showed up because of his letter. That's hilarious... But yeah that kid was totally useless except for the scene with his dad which was pretty cute.

reply

Durrrr...he's into monsters. Why else would he be in the club?

Rudy, question.
Yeah?

The question isn't why would he want to be in the club, but why would they LET HIM?

12 year old kids traditionally don't hang out with 7 year olds, they were trying to be cooler (hence why they wanted Rudy...the cooler, older middle school kid who wore a leather jacket and smoked).

reply

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the reason why Rudy was let in the club was because he stood up for Horace and Horace consequently suggested to the others to admit him? If he passed the monster test that is. lol

Also, my reason why Eugene is in the club is why they let him in. Assumedly, not too many kids around that area were into monsters as big as the rest of the club so it was mostly a case of "birds of a feather...".

Rudy, question.
Yeah?

You may as well ask why they'd hang out with the awkward, motor mouth chubby kid. I saw the Monster Squad as a group that isn't well liked by most of the other kids. The core members definitely seem to be Sean and Patrick. Likely it was originally just the two of them. Horace and Eugene were probably let in because they were the only other kids who wanted to hang out with them and/or shared their love for monsters. They're all four the social misfits so they stick together, united by their mutual appreciation for monsters. Friendship, true friendship, can be unusual.

Rudy was the only one who seemed to be respected by other kids, and he only joined because he was invited; he'd never offered to hang out with them. And the only reason the invitation was extended was because he made E.J. stop picking on Horace. I got the impression Sean and Patrick knew Rudy casually beforehand, but they'd been afraid to approach him and he'd been aloof (or at least distant) enough to act indifferent towards them. It took the incident with Horace to make them realize he wasn't like all the other cool kids, so they worked up the nerve to go and do more than just say hello; to invite him into their little circle of friends, and he figure, why not.

That's my take.

I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?
