Question about the description.
"While staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Anne..."
I don't really remember Clive's wife being shallow. In fact, I don't really remember that much about Anne. Did I miss something?
I don't think she was shallow. Poor choice of word. She was certainly clueless, but sweet and accepting. She didn't talk down to Maurice like Clive's mother did. She wasn't only concerned with status and reputation.
Agreed, poor choice of word. 'Naive' would've been better.
