Let's Hear it for Men's long underwear...

I guess it's very chilly in Britain, even in the summer, because the men all seemed to have long underwear on under their clothes. Maybe it was the style of the times; maybe short underwear (e.g. tighty whities) hadn't been invented yet.

But I have to say, it's very flattering on all of the men! Maurice has them on during his examination with his doctor friend (and man, did James Wilby have some nice thighs!). And he had on the long undies shirt during the scene when he hangs out the window into the rain. And Alec gets dressed, starting with his long underwear, at the end of the hotel scene.

I loved the hotel scene (not only for the obvious reasons!), because Maurice was making himself very vulnerable, telling Alec that they should basically go for it, chuck it all, and go away together, all while he was sitting nude on the bed. Alec, on the other hand, was getting dressed, denying his baser wishes/instincts, and trying to turn his back on the whole thing. Well, we all know how that ended!

Anyway, love this movie!

Indeed. It would not surprise me AT ALL if this film launched a thermal longjohns fetish among gay men. Particularly (OMG) in the hotel scene. ;) If you bought the DVD, just don't ever watch Alec getting dressed in slow-motion if you want to retain your sanity.

On a more serious note, I think this was normal men's underwear in the Edwardian era - and seasonally appropriate, as Maurice was filmed in October-December 1986. (Whereas, in the novel, the Maurice-Pendersleigh-Alec-Russet Room-cricket-hotel storyline all takes place in about 6 days in August.) I have a horrible suspicion that the more lightweight version of these pants might have been knee-length - not so flattering even on such awesomely beautiful men!

I've been a huge fan of Maurice since its 1987 first release (and I'm lucky that I get to write about these films, and their audiences, academically as part of my job), so I've been reading your posts with interest - always great to see new fans!

Aw, thanks for your nice reply! It's great that there is a place to come and discuss our favorite movies/actors intelligently! This board has been a respite for me!

And yes, I've just purchased the DVD (2-disc with great interviews and deleted scenes), and have already used the slow motion feature numerous times. Ahem.

It'd be interesting if they remade the movie and instead of long underwear, they go for CK's tight whities, lol.

It was probably the Inder Armour of their time.
