Spotting why Alec Scudder isn't posh
I'm an American and wondering how exactly how Alec Scudder in a suit is instantly recognizable as not "posh."
shareI guess a few factors could be at work here: the fabric and cut of the suit (cheaper fabric, unfashionable color, not as tailored); and his hat looked like a working man's hat as well.
Also, I think Alec wore his suit differently. He really doesn't look like the kind of guy who dresses up a lot. Whereas Maurice and his co-workers unconsciously carry themselves as though they're wearing a dinner jacket or tuxedo jacket, even though they're just wearing a work suit, Alec managed to look slightly uncomfortable, both in his suit and being in a stockbroker's office.
He did look awfully cute in his suit, though (and out of it, ahem!)
