Think it'll be a good while yet. FilmFour have only just started releasing blu-rays (two - Life is Sweet and A Room with a View). I'm quite happy with my two-disc special edition DVD, especially that it's now deleted. Picture's a bit dodgy, though.

Thank you very much for posting this..I have been checking for a long time and did not know about the region free bluray release. I just bought my copy! Pity about the quality as you say..perhaps not proper restoration..

Which film are you talking about - Maurice? Because that's still unavailable on blu-ray.

I was commenting on your posting on A Room with a View....I did not know it was out as Region 0..

The Criterion DVD release has a ton of extras and imho holds up pretty well.

I don't think that the original film reel source from the 80s is able to be polished and transferred to such a digital high level that it's worthy for a Blu Ray release.

Except the Criterion release is out of print.

I'm certain they could produce an HD version. It might display the limitations of the film stock, but I'm certain it'd still be an improvement over DVD.

I'd love "Maurice" in HD definition on Blu-Ray, but I don't think the demand's high enough to warrant a release. I have the Criterion DVD, and its picture quality is pretty good. Too bad it's out of print and thus highly expensive to buy.

Not long ago, they announced that the Cohen Media Group had acquired the Merchant Ivory catalog (minus A Room With A View) and that Maurice was one of the titles they intended to restore and release to Blu-Ray.

So, no release date or expected time frame or if it'll be among the first Merchant Ivory Titles they'll release, but it'll happen.

I own their release of "Thief of Bagdad" (1924), and it's about as good as you could even ask for from Criterion with a great transfer and a booklet. Hopefully this will be just as good.

How is the quality?

We definitely need this on bluray. I had completely forgotten about it until I was doing a search for Merchant Ivory films and this one turned up. How shocked I was to an an old, region 2 dvd with 2.0 sound. With the tech we have today, a bluray could, and should be done for all of the Merchant/Ivory films.

And here's what I suspect. Since James Ivory, who was part of the brilliant partnership of Merchant/Ivory, is still alive I suspect he will make sure that all of their films will be made available with the best technology available considering the media. This says bluray to me. And if you want to receive updates you might want to sign up at Merchant Ivory for any news.

I got the new Cohen Media Blu-Ray of Howard's End, and when you select "Play Movie," it shows a preview for other Merchant Ivory titles in the works for Blu-Ray and theatrical reissue, including a 4K remaster of Maurice, complete with a short clip that looks incredible. (Okay, Hugh Grant's closeup is a little soft, but otherwise...)

So a Blu-Ray is no longer speculation, it's definitely coming, and if it's anything like the handsome package for Howard's End (2 discs, slip box, booklet, preordering it from Amazon as soon as it was available got it for $15), it'll be well worth the wait.

You can sign up for Cohen Media or Merchant Ivory's mailing lists, or do what I do and follow the RSS feed for news at http://Blu-Ray.com for all new Blu-Ray releases announced in the US. Cohen Media Group has a newsletter sign up on their website here: http://cohenmedia.net/, Merchant Ivory has one on their site as well: http://www.merchantivory.com/

Alternately, Blu-Ray.com will send you an e-mail when a title comes up for preorder just by entering your e-mail on an unreleased title's page: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Maurice-Blu-ray/133662/
