'He died from fear. The fear of it killed him.'

One of the dumbest lines of the movie. Ellen really thought her husband died because he was living in fear of sharks? Wasn't he the same guy that risked his life to destroy two huge Great Whites?

reply

Absolutely, it couldn't have been that those cigs he was smoking killed him?

It's a shame they couldn't bring Roy Scheider back to reprise his role and have HIM be the one that died clearing the log in the opening scene.

Terrible things Lawrence. You've done terrible things.

reply

I'm glad they didn't do that. The Chief should never be killed off. Especially by a shark.

reply

Agree!

reply

That's why he declined. He thought it was dumb for his character to die that way. So instead they killed off Sean.

reply

Why would he be in this movie anyway. He didn't want to be in the 2nd one.

reply

How could he have been scared?! He killed 2 of them!!

According to the Jaws The Revenge novel Brody started having heart issues after the second shark. Keep in mind the novel follows the Jaws 2 novelization. Which was a completely different story than the film.

I'm not a fan if Brody sitting in fear either, but I'll take it over him getting eaten within 10 minutes.

The Revenge novelization is an interesting read. The shark is more of a pawn rather than a revenge seeking creature.

Lol its still a over the top story however Hank Searls makes it fun to read

Lol I didn't say it was a brilliant reason.

Given the choice I'd rather Brody killed by the shark. Him 'dying from fear' neuters his character; the last time we see him he willfully enters the water to throw a cable into the sharks mouth from a raft, you're telling me someone who has the guts to do something like that dies from fear?

reply

He was the one that nailed two great whites, yes. If anything, the sharks should be scared to death by him!!

He shouldn't have died at all. They should've stopped after Jaws 2. And anyway, he didn't die of fear. That was just Mrs. Brody going off the deep end. He died as their son said, of a heart attack. Plain and simple. Having a shark kill Brody would be horrible and the worst thing they could do. If you want to get Brody out of there it's better to make a Jaws movie with different characters unrelated to Brody. Have a similar incident like Amity's occur somewhere else. After Jaws 2, it was ridiculous to bring another sequel to Amity. It was possible for another shark to come back to Amity. A rogue Great White like in the first one was pushing it, but okay. In New Jersey there was a real life Jaws incident in the summer of 1916. It was kind of like the movie. So Jaws was possible. Is it possible for something like this to happen again? Maybe, but it hasn't yet and next year will be the 100th anniversary. Having another rogue go to Amity to feed like the other two sharks would be going way too far.

Because Sid Sheinberg is a very selfish egotistical man. He wanted Gary (his wife) to be the hero in part 2 (or at least sidekick) but was told "over my dead body". The fact is Ellen Brody was always meant to be the loving supportive wife character. So when he became head of studio, he decided his wife was going to be the hero and star of the movie despite others wishes and what the fans wanted. Basically his wife was going to be the lead and no one could stop him because he was in charge. So he did whatever he could to be sure the movie would always be focused on his wife. The first act was to kill off the real star and fan favourite of the movie (Martin Brody) so his wife could be the full focus. As you can see the original script called for our favourite character to be killed off easily by a shark after all he'd went through in the first two movies, just so his wife could be the star. Luckily Roy declined so Sean was killed instead. But basically they said Brody had died of a heart attack, just so his wife could take center stage.
I mean a 50+ unattractive actress at the helm of an action picture? How often does this happen. Nepotism at its best

reply

Exactly, he looked those giant killer bastards in the eye and killed them. Its more likely all the Megalodons died fearing meeting Chief Brody in the future than Brody dieing of fear of sharks.

He died of a heart attack years later when he read in a book that sharks can reincarnate after being killed three times.

you know what i think would have made for a better movie?

Have Chief Brody thought of as a local hero 10 years after killing the second shark and be a celebrity among amity. Have a shark kill Brody early in the film with vigilante citizens of Amity taking it upon themselves to go after the beast that kills Brody, maybe even have some rich person put up a ransom. Michael can still be a marine biologist and decide that it's on him to avenge his fathers death while amateurs are getting killed off attempting to destroy the shark. You can even have Michael blame himself as he went sailing during the second film with Sean which caused his father to enter the water again.

Ya know... that might actually work. Keeps the action in Amity - who cares if it's winter time - they could skip ahead a few months if they want to film in sunnier weather - and Amity, imo, is the crucial as well as the nostalgic setting. There could be scenes showing the different behaviors/reactions of the locals to Chief Brody's death-by-shark, and there could be a nod to the Spielberg film when the actual hunt starts - some Amity hunters are responsible, others shouldn't be on the water at all, some are sneaky and greedy... Congrats on coming up with an interesting scenario.

OT: as others have said, I would much rather have had Schieder come back and Brody get killed in the first part of the film. The audience would really feel the pain, and cheer that much more the town's concerted effort to kill the shark. And Brody could have been killed just a little later in the film than his son does in the current movie - that would build more sympathy and stir nostalgic memories of Brody from the first two films. Again, as a poster said, it's far more realistic and appropriate for Brody's character to be killed by a shark, rather than die off-screen of a generalized shark-fear heart attack.
