Whatever happened to the REMAKE??

Still in pre-production......although from what I've read about the storyline, is it really a remake considering it's supposed to take place 20 years after the original ? Wouldn't that make it a sequel ? And is it going to ignore part 2, which I hope it does ? Too many questions !!!!
